I have some like that, older "Ace" used to use the die shape too. I think you can still get the handle from SO.
The set screw is to adjust the threads for a tighter or looser fit.

If by star shape you mean 12 point, drive them with a common 12 point socket.

For some reason I am still a little confused op is there any chance you could show us a picture of the die in question. I don't recall seeing a twelve point die, not saying they are out there to be seen just that I do not recall seeing one; I have seen square, round, & hex dies.

Its for chasing threads that are messed up. Use any wrench in it.

Me either! Been a Maintenance Machinist since the 70's, retired 22 years now, and have a drawer full chasing dies. Not a 12 point there at all! Thats a weird one!

Those are very standard. You can use a 12 point socket or wrench on them as well as the handle for them.
Yes they are adjustable, but they are adjusted to a standard setting. Threads have classes of fits, this enables the manufacturer to adjust the die to a more precise standard class of fit but it also allows a really knowledgable user to adjust then for a tighter or looser class of fit if need be.

Beg to differ. All my cutting dies are round, meant to be put in 2 sided handle for doing straight (think perpendicular to the bare metal) threads. Sure, you can use a 6/12 point die, but not made for that.

also curious on why some have 3 clearance holes, some 4, some 5, some 6. I get the 3 for smaller ones but larger ones don't seem to follow a specific pattern...

My older US made Cman set is all 6 point, I also have those two SO sets (metric is Blue Point), they are for cutting and NOT chasing.
Are you saying ONLY round dies are for cutting?

actually $5 was for the craftsman toolbox, (with those dies) a piston ring compressor, piston ring expander, piston groove cleaner, K-D 2400 OHV valve spring compressor, about 24 taps, 3 tap handles, one die handle, craftsman robogrip pliers, 3 sets of crimping pliers, a few xcelite nut driver bits, and I forget what else...
oh yes I do, a brand new in the box, still sealed in plastic, Craftsman 1-3" micrometer...
I just don't usually show off all the yard sale stuff I get deals on...I hit about 30 sales a week during the summer and only stop when the vehicle is full. I really need to start re-selling some of this stuff.....

They are cutting dies. At one end they cut 75% nominal (standard for basic dies) and at the other end they cut 60% for a looser fit. Other split dies can be opened up too but it is more difficult to gage what you are doing.

I have both 41 pc std and metric sets of snap on (irwin) 12pt dies and taps...
they are def made for cutting new thread or chasing old ones the nice thing about the adjustment is you have more control over your final tolerance, as well it can make them much easier to start with less tolerance and you then set the desired final size...
The handles that come with the set are made for 12pt dies.... and from what I have heard from the Snap on reps is that it just gives the mechanic more use ability with all the different drive tools and combinations you can make to reach in place you could never get to with a round die..... I used this feature a few times with great success...
