Question on wiring two lifts

New to the forum. I currently have a 2 post lift (240v 20a) and I'm planning to add a new 4 post (120v 30a). Can I wire both to a single 240v circuit, 30a 2 pole breaker and #10 wire?

No, your 2 post is 240V and your 4 post is 120V...
I never understood why on gods green earth lift suppliers would ship 120V 30A motors on 4 post lifts instead of 240V 15A motors.
IF both were 240V, you'd be able to get away with wiring 1 breaker to both lifts as you will be using only 1 at a time, however that might not meet code.

Sure you can. Wire it as a multi wire branch circuit using 10/3. You'll have both 240V and 120V at 30A. You need to hardwire both lifts. Use only 2pole common trip breaker.

I understand the MWBC... but can he use a 30A breaker on a motor that calls for a 20A breaker? Knowing the individual motor horsepowers / current ratings would help the determination.

Telling us 120/30A and 240/20A means almost NOTHING.

For the most part the fact that they are different voltages, one is 120V the other 240V, means they should have separate circuits.

To size circuit wiring and breakers we need to know Horse Power, voltage and FLA. Sometimes fla is not needed but if the motors are non standard size then it is needed.

For example tell me that the first lift has a 2hp 240V motor with an FLA of 11 amps. Better yet just post a picture of the nameplates.

How do you know it demands a 20A breaker? Could be listed as minimum circuit size as 20A, the OP didn't specify. The breaker protects the wiring, not the attached equipment. And yes it would help to know the HP of the motors.

The breaker does not really protect the wiring, the applied load does. The breaker provides short circuit interruption. These do not come with a factory plug and are normally wired with a dedicated circuit. Mine called for 14 wire min and 30 breaker. For the 120V I believe I have seen them 12/30 hard wired. If a guy was to put a plug on might need to be a 30 plug and a 30 wire on the circuit.

Do what! The breaker provides overload protection for the wiring from excessive applied loads. It also protects the wiring from a short circuit which is nothing but an instantaneous overload.

Edit: It just dawned on me that you may be talking about this being a circuit for a motor with its own overload protection. Lift motors I've deal with don't have independent overload protection so the breaker is it.

Most dedicated calc circuits the breaker isnt there for thermal. The calc thev installer did. Air cond circuits,, 12 wire, 40 breaker, same for comps and welders. A.C. buzzer doesnt have any internal thermal, allows 12 on 50A. Compact mig, 14/30. If it comes factory cord/plug then it's over current limited to breaker that size with wire to match with exception of welders. A hoist doesn't have internal thermal due to forget duty cycle. Breaker only sized for short circuit.
Other machines, compact mig has internal which may also protect cord provided its big enough for short.
I have a Mohawk, 14 wire, 30 breaker, no overload. What they are implying along with similar circuits is installed has to provide wire large enough to tolerate the thermal load.
General circuits with multiple outlets need wire suffecient and breaker small enough to do thermal, but most of the actual load is only short protected if a single appliance is plugged in using 15A plug.
1hp well may run only 6A but might be on 12/30, such a huge loaded start draw.

Run 10-3, or (perhaps 8awg in conduit, like I did) to a sub panel near the lift, then pull two fused switches off that sub panel, one 240 v ( I think my lift called for a 25 amp fused disconnect) and one 120v appropriately fused switch for the four poster.

Some of the instructions on them do say fuse or breaker. We touched on this and the 5hp motor. I believe I see some welding machine instructions say breaker or normal acting fuses.
