Quick NEC question

I need to run a 15amp 240v circuit to power a thru-the-wall AC unit in my garage. I'm considering using 2 conductor #14 romex and remarking the white conductor because I have it on hand. I seem to recall a conductor smaller then #6 cannot be remarked as per the NEC. Is this correct? Thanks.

I think you are thinking of 200.6 but that only applies to "insulated, grounded conductors" (ie. neutral) You can take a white wire in Romex and remark it as a hot wire, its done all the time. You are not allowed to take a black or red and remark it as a grounded conductor (neutral). You cannot take a loose wire in conduit and remark the ends of it, in conduit it has to be marked full length. Romex is different.

Individual wires that size cannot be remarked, but I belive it is OK to remark conductors in a manufactured cable assembly such as Romex. For example, 10-2 Romex is frequently used to supply an electric water heater with the white wire remarked as red.

the rule for #6 and smaller is for remarking black to white, and that doesnt apply to cable just individual conductors. Youre fine with your 14/2 as long as the AC unit doesnt need a neutral for some reason.
