recessed light to surface vanity light?

I'm not quite sure how to go about this. I have recessed lighting above the vanitys in my house. I bought a vanity light to put in one of the bathrooms instead. The problem is the recessed light hole is larger than the mounting area for the new lighting.

What is the best way to go about putting the new light in?

Yes.

The new fixture is too small to span/cover the current lighting hole

Remove the recessed can housing, add a box, patch hole.

what he said, you need to add a box secured so you can mount the new light to that. patch the hole, buy a fixture with a larger base or buy a trim ring to cover the original opening

I hope you got a ceiling light and not a wall light like I picture in my head. They do make kits that go into recessed lights to do what you want and then change back later if you change your mind

The new light is indeed for a ceiling. I've looked at the conversion kits previously, the problem is they have a round trim ring and the base on the new light is a rectangle.

I did see in a previous thread a guy used some molding around a rectangular light to cover up a bigger hole. Maybe I'll need to do that.

Any other ideas?
