I know there are tons of threads about flashlights here, but the more i read the more confused i get.
And i know i am probably going to get even more confused by posting this thread :willy_nil

Put simply; i want a cheap flashlight with a lot of bang for the buck. For use in the garage. Max $60.

I've had one in my pocket every day for about a year now and it holds up just fine, is amazingly bright and focused, and last months on a pair of AAA batteries.
Cost about $15, well wroth it!

For a more serious flashlight I really like a Surefire LumaMax, I've got an L2, but would like the new version L2X expensive but really is an amazing flashlight, no regrets buying one.

I like Makita's flashlights that go with my other Makita tools and battery chargers. Most cordless tool systems have a flashlight available from what I've seen so whatever you use now should be able to get a flashlight for under $30. Sometimes you'll get real lucky and a battery might come with it. Some tool systems have a fluorescent lamp available too.

Here are two excellent options. (one small, one big)

Romison RC-N3 Q5. Get it at shinningbeam.com with the Q5 emitter. It's about $25.

Get an incandescent Maglite host (2D - 6D will work) and drop in a Fusion 36.
The flood is amazing and you'll have a high quality Maglite host. Cost is $23 + cost of Maglite unless you have one collecting dust.

My local costco had a 3 pack of cree LED flashlights (w/9 AAA batteries) for $17. I wasn't expecting much, but the cree LED's are indeed very good. Highly recommended!

Edit: Flashlight uses a single cree XP-C led, not available on Costco's website as far as I can tell.

I don't have either one, but they both seem like great suggestions, depending on what you are looking for. I'm going to keep my eye on the Fusion 36.

Not sure of the pricing in the U.S, but i really rate the Led Lenser P7. Snap-On dealers over here stock them (albeit rebranded).

Those Costco Cree's are a good light. Just be aware that they have a feature to monitor battery life. Unfortunately the IC that monitors the battery life is consuming power 24/7 while the flashlight is off. (.1 ma)

After several months the flashlight will be dead from the residual current draw.

For this reason they may be good tactical lights but poor general purpose/glove box/junk drawer flashlights.

Well.. I got one new in the package at a swap meet from a tool dealer. I remember the older AAAA versions were pretty cheap too.

But now that I look online you're right the new one is more expensive, but still a great deal.

that fusion 36 looks interesting. Do you have any info on runtime?

Is that the state of the art in drop in's at a reasonably low price?

I purchased the Mag LED upgrade several years ago and it made a world of difference, but I imagine it's rather outdated now. Will this put the MAG LED upgrade to shame?

In the $60 range this Fenix is worth a look. It's a high spec'd light for the price. One big plus is the glass lens. Plastic gets scratched up and also fogs when it comes into contact with solvents.

I don't own that model but do have a Fenix LD01 and I'm impressed with the quality. That's coming from a surefire owning flashlight snob:lol_hitti

The Fusion 36 is absolutely the best bang for the buck for Mag Lite drop ins.

It's far superior to the stock LED Mag Lite. I bought one and was so impressed I have another 3 on order for the incan. Mag Lites that were collecting dust.

You can read more about it here:

really need more info to recommend a good light,

You want to pocket carry? Clip?
What battery type? CR123A, AA, AAA ?
Rear click switch, or twist switch
Multimode?

Without know these, I am going to recommend what I have been using for the past year, I love it also, But this was like my 8th Fenix light, I use them for a while and then I retire them or put them in my truck, BOB or family member, But this one has been the best so far, All of them have been 1000% reliable

Heres the batteries I have been using for the past 6yrs and have had zero trouble with, I have like 300 Stocked up, every light Or headlamp I have is lithium powered, just by the 2 sealed together in a stick to get a matched set

I have an Olight T20-M that I goes nearly everywhere I go. It's been a great light so far. It uses 2x CR123 batteries, a CREE LED, has 5 modes (L-6 lumens, M-60 lumens, H-220 lumens, SOS, & strobe), and includes a nice belt holster and pocket clip. Costs about $40 on ebay--less if you watch and catch a "sale." I bought mine from the seller Outfittercountry for ~$33.
