Reddy heater hookup question

I picked up a used 80K btu Reddy heater with hose attached but the threaded end on the valve will not screw into the propane tank that I have, are there different thread sizes on the tanks that I am not able to thread it on? I have looked at the threads and they good. Would it be best to get a new one and not try to use the old one? If a new one is in the future are the ones for a BBQ the same as a heater?

Thanks, Kerwin

I have never hooked up a propane tank before so didn't think of it being a left hand thread. That worked like a charm

That heater puts out a lot of heat in short order

Thanks

You probably have a heater with the older style valve hookup. New tanks are required to have valving in them to prevent over pressurizing them (OPD valve) and it has (if I recall) an external Acme thread on it (and a special handle shape, a tri wing valve knob is required I think, as a form of ID) while the older tanks have a valve with internal threads and a typical round knob.

Do some google searches for Propane valves, OPD valves, etc and you will find all kinds of adapters, etc.

Sorry Charlie: But OPD stands for Overfill Protection Device. This is something I do know about since I fill gas grill bottles at my 7:30 - 4:30 job. You don't need an adapter because even the new style valves have the new style acme externaly and a POL threads internaly.

I'd imagine that 20 lb bottle won't last long with an 80k btu heater. You may want to check into having your local propane company bringing in a 100 or 200lb cylinder. Check out and compare the pricing, usually filling the bottles for grill is way more expensive than having a regular cylinder filled.
