I have a Reed 104 1\2 and was considering repainting it. Does anyone know what the original paint scheme looked like? It's currently fire engine red all over.

Jal: more than likely a natural or a black color for the old Reed vises. here's my 104 that has sat under a bench in a machine shop for most of it's 90+ years. also to get that color that my 104 is you might just strip off the red and put a few coats of BLO (boiled linseed oil) on it and some of the guys bake that in a smoker to make it shine more.
you might want to post a few before and after pictures on the Vise Repair 101 thread that gets a lot more views an attention. once your thread gets off the first page or two here it might disappear.

The Reed vises were a gloss or semi-gloss black until sometime in the early 1950's, when the standard colour was changed to a medium grey.
If you carefully strip or sand down the existing re-paint on your vise, you should find original black or grey paint.
The cast lettering was commonly tipped with either white or stove aluminium on vises of the 'black paint' era, and with white on the later grey-painted ones.
