Reed hinged pipe vise 1s

I inherited this from my father a member of depression era that could fix anything. I was born more ignorant. I would like to understand the purpose of the backside of this Reed hinged pipe vise. It’s marked “1 S”.

That was once upon a time a "tripod" stand vise that someone modified, possibly due to it being broken. I couldn't begin to guess what advantage the hinged plate brings though.

Bolt it to a bench, work vertically? No clue.

Alright, I see now how the modification works. There are three square blocks welded to a flat base holding the vise to the base with bolts. The base would then be bolted to a bench through 3 holes in the base. Thanks for you help. Also does anyone know about the age of the vise - serial number looks like 2005101 ? Thanks again
