Refrigerator Compressor Relay

I have an old Kenmore 22 Coldspot garage refrigerator that stopped cooling. I believe the Compressor relay has failed. I cannot find a parts list for this old model, The relay is marked 8EA405 FSP 1105046. I have not found a match to these numbers, but the searches usually bring up a similar looking " IC-4 Universal Refrigerator Freezer Compressor PTC Start Relay" similar to this relay at applianceparts365.com ( https://www.applianceparts365.com/ic-4-universal-refrigerator-freezer- compressor-ptc-start-relay ). A picture of my OE relay is attached. Will this relay be an OK replacement?

Those relays are sized by start winding amps draw. They are not interchangeable. You need to find one for your compressor.

Have you tried searching for a start relay using the model number off the compressor?

It's hard to tell from your image how everything is connected. I've replaced a couple of those and I looked at the connections and post numbers when I replaced them. I remember the manufactures had a schematic on some of those relays and they also rated them by horsepower of the compressor. I also replaced the overload protector while I was in there. They were still ok, but general advice was to replace them both as the cost is minimal and you're in there already. I'm not sure how valid it is, but I did it anyway.

Did you check yours with a meter or were you able to shake it and hear the burnt bits moving inside?

Thank you for the replies. I have not been successful in finding an OE PTC relay (part # 8EA405). It is small - 24x24x32mm. When I used the suggestion of working from the compressor end (Compressor HEG9, 15uF capacitor, 2.0FLA, 115V), I was not successful. Am I close that this is approximately a 1/3 Horespower compressor motor?

The OE relay's wire connections are fed from the 15uF start capacitor with a blue wire (terminal 3) and a red wire (terminal 2). A second red wire is attached to the capaciitor red wire at terminal 3 and is fed from the line source through the overload device to the terminal 3 connection.

The relay was troubleshot with a meter; however, the relay has the rattle.

I have seen the 3in1 relay capacitors. Are these OK? I prefer an OE relay fit so that I can use the cover over the compressor connection, just a cleaner install. Would I still use the existing 15Uf start capacitor and the OE overload device with the 3in!?

I'm no expert on this, but I did trouble shoot/replace a couple. I think you can find a relay like you linked in your first post to work but you'll need to check the ratings and wiring

I've found that part numbers change throughout the years for common appliances and that many of the parts are interchangeable.

At 15 uF, that's likely the run capacitor, that should help you determine the wiring set up.

Do you know how to do relay bypass?
Check Youtube.
I would do this first just make sure the compressor is ok.

fitter30, Thank you, I am plannning to get this used relay as I cannot locate something new.

I would still like to cross reference to a new relay and overload. I have not been able to determine the Horsepower of my compressor. The newer relays seem to connect directly to a compressor pin (common pin?) while my OE overload is wired in series with the red power wire. I just got from Sear's a cross reference to my refrigerator model - part #W11239930 Refrigerator Compressor Overload Protector (relay & overload kit) that is supposed to fit and is available; however, the overload looks like it mounts directly to a compressor pin. I do not know if this is actually a replacement. Again, I have been trying to determine how to make sure the relay and overload are sized properly.

Does anyone know of an Appliance Forum similar to Garage Journal?
