removing a duplex receptacle installind recest light?

I'm going to install a recessed light and I'm going to be feeding from a box that is currently a receptacle with bottom outlet switched. Hot wire tab is broken off.

My question is this since the top outlet is always hot and the bottom is switched. How do I join the top outlet sow it feeds threw the circuit or am I at the end?

I have 2 black wires and 2 white wires feeding this box.

What do you want to acomplish? Do you want the new recessed light to switch on and off with the switch half of the receptical?

Be careful--one of your white wires may be hot! You may have a "switch leg" where a black and white going to the wall switch are both hot--one always hot and one switched hot. In this case the white wire is *supposed* to be remarked to non-white.

You will probably need a "pigtail" with a wire nut to connect up your new fixture to the switched hot feeding your receptical. You will likeley also need pigtails for your netural and ground.

Make sure to take time to understand the existing circuit as well as what you want to do--if you aren't 100% confident get some help!

Yes that is what I won't. Not shire how to handle the always hot receptical. I need to eliminate it. Other wise I have it handled.

To eliminate, just nut off the constant hot and push to the back of the box. Doesn't sound like it's feeding anything.

Thanks that is what I did. I all sow tied the neutrals together is that correct? It seems to work ok that way.

If it's working, it's OK. I'm pretty sure at this point one of your whites was not a switch leg. But you have an extra neutral there now. I've never heard that would be a problem.
