OK so help me out here. I know how to do the ring test to check grinding wheels. But what I don't know is if different grits are going to produce different rings, maybe higher pitched than I can hear 'ring' so all I hear is the initial impact.
So I ordered two 6" stones from Zoro. Norton both, 100 and 150 grit white Al oxide wheels. They arrived in a padded envelope. In each box was stuffed a rectangle of cardboard I assume to help prevent breaking. Not wrapped so they can still bang against each other. Which I think is what happened.
I have a good and bad stone on this grinder already so I have some to compare against. The new stones don't have any visible cracks; I didn't take off the labels however. I put a spare piece of rod in the vise, put on the good stone which is 60 grit, and I get the ring I'm expecting.
I get either the 100 or 150 grits new stones, they do not thunk but they don't ring the way I expect. I did back and forth the good stone and one of these, the bad stone (36 grit) and one of these, trying to hear a distinct ring or thunk by comparison. So maybe they are good, I am coming here for help from those who have experience that I don't.
I had a different spare set (they are HF, to be fair) of 36 & 60 grit 8" stones, these have all been 6". The two HF ones ring basically the same sound. It is a little different tone, but it's basically the same sustained ring.
Also relevant maybe? I am not tone deaf but I can't really play by ear. I think I'm somewhere in the 'normal' middle of those two.
