Robertson or Scrulox vs. Square Drive

Is Robertson/Scrulox developed in Canada different from what we call 'Square Drive' in the US? I bought a Snap On SDDROB42 #2 "square drive" screwdriver, but it won't fit #2 square drive wood screws. It's very close but due to a very slight taper it won't fit. I'm wondering if it is actually a Robertson driver and square drive is different?

I think you answered your own question, I believe there is a slight taper on a Robertson. That's why they can cam out, and they don't sit nearly as well on a screw driver as you'd think they should.

From what I have read, true Robertson bits and even screws are harder to come by, yes, they have a slight taper versus none for square drive. Most everything you see in most stores is square drive.

Robertson, and then his family when he passed on, always had licensing issues (they asked for too much $$$ for the rights).

But the vast majority is square drive, even more so in the US than Canada.

I think you are right. I just wonder why Snap On describes this screwdriver as Square Drive when it's really a Robertson. I guess I never really knew there was a difference between the two and apparently neither does Snap On!

Well the product S/N you listed, and I know nothing about them to be honest, even has a nice big ROB right in the middle, so maybe they used the same description as another tool and just used a different S/N?
