Roebuck socket

Recently bought a job lot of random sockets, as i noticed it had a bunch of older US made ones, Including a BE marked Craftsman, and a Hinsdale (plus some old European and British makes but doubt as many are interested in those here)

Among them was this old socket, which i can't seem to find any information on.

I presume its Sears roebuck due to the Roebuck name in a diamond on it, but only ones i can find that Sears marked as such are older pressed steel ones?

Had a search through the forum and nothing similar came up, as did googling

Its appears quite early as its bare steel, hot broached and doesn't have recesses in the drive square for a detent ball, and other then the size and the aforementioned diamond logo its completely plain, no details or knurling on it.

It does appear to have been ground down for some reason, quite crudely so probably after was manufactured (looks like it may have been to remove previous owners markings as its just the center section that's been touched)


Can anyone enlighten me on it if indeed it is US made and part of a pre Craftsman Sears-Roebuck set? or am i completely wrong and its an unrelated manufacturer

only similar looking sockets i have are some old early (pre war i think) German Gedore ones, and i think that's more a coincidence than anything.

From which era, Todd? Their early sockets had that wide band of knurling, no? Also, I've seen Roebuck sockets before in Whitworth sizes, and I've never seen an American made socket stamped with the "A/F" (Across the Flats) marking. I think it's a British made socket.

Seems its nothing to do with the Roebuck name in the US then..

Interestingly that example you linked and some others I've found on ebay, are identical bar the stamping to another old UK make, Swinborne, so presumably were made by them for someone, or both made by the same contractor (not much info out there on Swinborne)

Snapmom is correct. That Roebuck name is still in use now. There are socket sets called Roebuck that appear to be Asian imports marketed in the UK.

The socket you posted looks like a nice old British made.

I agree it looks like the certain Hinsdale with that smooth tapered look. Pretty sure this one is British though.

Roebuck is the name which Buck & Hickman use on their gear.
