romex for 220 and 110?

hey yall first post here, i just got my own garage and need some help. I only have one outlet and will need.. well a few more. I know i can jump a couple more outlets from the one that i have, but i also have to run some 220 line for my grinder. can i jump that off of the dryer? and if so, what kind of romex will i need?

any help is appreciated

Try to never jump 220. Run a new line from the box.

Romex will depend on what amp you want to run.

So in the end we kind of need more info to give you a good answer.

code here is a maximum of 12 outlets per circuit.
15A circuits use 14ga wire,
20a circuits use 12.

Unless your circuit spans more than 80feet you should be fine with standard gauges.


220v grinder? what in the name of hades are you grinding?

if you post up the amperage/wattage of the grinder and its distance from your breaker box we can easily let you know the wire size and breaker rating for your circuit.

Commercial does have rules on this, no? I would just use a similar allowance as commercial.

Estimate so many watts or amps per outlet and come up with a number for a max value. Let's say 8 per 20 amp circuit. Sounds good.

Not exactly.Many circuits have a maximum of one,some circuits have an unlimited number,most have a specific number of receptacles allowed...

BTW,what is an "outlet",no mention of that term in either code,NEC or CEC.

Check again....NEC Article 100.......

A receptacle is an "Outlet".....but Not all "Outlets" are receptacles.......

A switch location is an "Outlet"........As well as a lighting fixture

Does the term "outlet" refer to the wire is OUT of it's insulation. ie connection points?
