Running Conduit w/sheathed cable

Is it okay to run sheathed cable inside conduit? Is it against code? Is it cost prohibitive? Can the sheathing be stripped off and wire run? Although I think unsheathed wire has a different coating on it - could be wrong. TIA

You can do it over short distances and for sleeves. It is a royal pain, it willl cost more and you have less flexibility with wire colors and number of wires.

Just go buy a few roll's of thhn. You might be able to buy it by the foot from a local guy but it will be more expensive if you need very much.

Running a new circuit in the garage for lighting. The ceiling is finished and I'll be hanging 4' LED bulb fixtures. total of 5 fixtures - 10 bulbs.

However you cannot strip the jacket off.

It's feasible and code permissible, if you already have wire on hand you want to use up then you could use it.

If you need to buy wire (or want it to be an easier job) I'd get black, white, and green THHN in whatever length you need. Most big box stores should have 25', 50', 100' rolls and larger.

They sell individual conductors (THHN) by the foot as well at the box stores, so no reason not to use it. Agree with advice above.

I'll add, as long as the conduit is sized correctly for the diameter of the cable. However, unless you're trying to use cable you already have on hand there's no advantage - just go ahead and buy some THHN/THWN wire, it will be easier to install anyway.

The big box stores around here don't sell THHN conductors smaller than 10awg by the foot. 12 and 14awg can only be purchased in packaged rolls. If I want 12 or 14 THHN cut to length I have to go to Ace Hardware or the supply house.

I've done it quite a bit - mainly due to "already have" sheathed wire and due to wiring areas where we alternate between conduit needed and traditional framing...

Sheathed cable is fine to meet code, but don't plan to pull it around any corners unless you have the conduit sized right. That outer sheath sticks to everything when trying to make a turn, and it does not pull well. Individual THHN wires have a very smooth coating, and are much easier to pull through the conduit.

I have also read somewhere (??) that pulling the individual wires out of an NM-B cable and running them in conduit is not code-compliant, since the wires are not labeled/marked individually. Its not dangerous; its just not compliant.

Make things easy and use EMT conduit- then you only need 2 wires. Lowes/HD sell THHN in 25, 50, 75, 100, and 500ft rolls.
