I couldn't see it like this for a long time and then, just fooling around, it opened up.

Basically he is reducing the number of posts required to post classified ads to 5 as a trial to see if it increases activity while still deterring spam.

Below is what Ryan posted if you could not access.

Hey guys, I have been thinking about this a lot recently and want to do a little testing to see how things go. Essentially, what I have done is changed the minimum post requirement to use the classifieds from 100 posts to just 5. Obviously, this will make the hurdle to use our classifieds much shorter... and this is a good and bad thing. A good thing in that it will hopefully jump start the market place a bit. A bad thing in that it will also make the hurdle shorter for scammers. Given that, please keep a couple of things in mind:

1. You buy and sell on The Garage Journal at your own risk!

2. We recommend using PayPal. This protects both the buyer and the seller in most instances... and in my experience, is the safest way to conduct an online transaction.

3. Always take a person's post count in to mind when conducting a transaction. Be smart. Use your intuition.

In any case, this is only a test... and we might go right back to a stricter environment. I just wanted to give it a shot before I start working on the Xenforo migration.

Thanks guys!

Ryan

I got the same error yesterday when I tried. He sent me this link that worked for me if you want to read it:
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/announcement.php?f=3

I saw the same issue. When I clicked the link in the "new posts" view, I got the permissions error. But when I went to the classifieds section and clicked the link there, I saw the message above.

I'm on the fence as to whether this is a good or bad idea.

Looks like a reasonable change

Regarding spammers......I think it's up to use to be diligent and report suspected spammers as soon as possible.

HOTFR.....If I recall, I believe the 'recommended' method for spammers is to just hit the Report button...type spam in the msg box and send....DO NOT respond to the original thread....right?

I see the live streaming spam in the wee hours of the morning. Sometimes they stay visible for several minutes, to as long as 30 minutes before. Need more moderators on at night time!

Time zone is the issue. Many spammers from Asia are in the same time zone as myself and 1/2Cup. It may be good to find another Mod in a time zone other than the USA and Australia. Often of it has not been reported it may sit for some time.

post count did not kill the classified area here. not being able to reply killed it.

way back when, the classified area was a busy place. i bought and sold many items here. when the no reply rules came into play the volume of items and traffic went in the toilet. ryan and the mods have always insisted that traffic in the classified has stayed the same and that no replies had nothing to do with it. if you used the classifieds before the change you know that is not the case and apparently the management finally admits that sales are down.

will this new rule change things? who knows? it may help but i stand by my opinion that people want to interact publicly in their transactions.

as a side note. it really bugs me that when people finish a transaction that they pull all of the info down and replace it with item sold or no longer available. there is value in knowing what items have been for sale and what the asking price and or selling price was.

Dayllight hours in Europe and China. You think they'll stay up late at night to spam us? Naaaahhh... they work when it's convenient, get their time in, and collect their yaun/kopecks/whatever for the 1000 sites a day they infest.

Same with the "419" spammers (eg from "BARRISTER Goodfellow PRINCE JOHN Nkuma SMITH Esq." of Nigeria, with his 3.5 million dollars US from of yours in trust)... tho they'll stay up late at night (I get these during the day sometimes), most come in at about 3 AM-ish pacific time.

Not unusual for me to come in at 3am and spend a few min....love reporting the spammers
