Score or not score

Getting ready to hopefully pour some concrete next weekend. My house slab will be 38x 46 and the garage will be 24x24. My question is on scoring/expansion joints.


I really do not like them. I will be doing stained concrete in the house and I kinda like the character that small concrete cracks give.

Beyond aesthetics, is there a reason to score or put expansion joints?

Yes, your floor WILL crack. These joints will at least tell the concrete where to crack. If the slab is small, use 4000K with fiber, less likely to crack.

Are you polishing too or stain/seal?

If grinding you can stain, fill the joints, grind.
If not grinding, you can stain, fill the joints neatly with a product that is compatible with the sealer you choose, then seal.

I plan on just using a stain and seal. I understand that the control joints will direct where it cracks but I prefer the look of a few natural cracks versus straight score lines. I know, I am strange. So my question is being that I do not mind the natural cracks, is there any other benefit of scoring the floor?

operative word is "few" More likely a lot of large cracks. Alternative is to saw cut your control joints for smaller lines. I have seen, where it's done to look like tile and then filled with tile grout and then sealed. Or for a smoothed surface look caulk it with a stainable material.
