What are people paying to buy scrap from a metal supplier? I bought 500 lbs of scrap and a drop today, the scrap was only 19 cents a lb... the drop was full price. I thought the scrap was quite low and the drop quite high, but what do I know.

I feel like I could almost visit the scrap bin daily. I almost wish I could make a list of stuff I want them to leave out for me.

What ***** is you have to climb in the bin with everything shifting. And in the bin is some nasty ****. The 2' or larger bin had a 6' piece of 8" round right on top, I can only imagine that shifting onto my ankle... ruh roh! Found some nice rectangular tube under everything though.

Feel lucky that you can buy scrap, we don't have a place like that around here, so it is either new or CL.

I do. I knew they inventoried drops so I thought they would be $$, but the scrap bins are awesome! Found a bunch of stuff I wish I had more of.

19 cents a pound... mmm.

A drop is any cutoff the customer pays for but doesn't take, as far as I know. If you need 4' of a 20' piece, you pay for 20' plus the cut charge, and they keep the remainder unless you take it.

The one I bought is 15'

You are correct on the drop. Dealer makes money twice on drops, plus the first poor ******* probably paid a cut charge, too.I can't believe they let you crawl in to the scrap bin, lots of liability there.

That is a pretty good price on the scrap at .19 per lb since around here they have been paying 8.5 to 10 cents per pound for scrap. I just can't believe they let you climb in the scrap bin due to the liability issues. Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Drops around here are full price but no cut charge.

I learned a while back that if you ask a metal yard for "scrap" they send you away. Ask to lokk at their drops and you are good to go.

Just realized I have some receipts next to the computer: A year ago I paid $0.65/lb for a whole bunch of QC-rejected rectangular tubing. There was also one piece priced at $0.50/lb - I think that was a solid 1/2" x 4" x ~24" cutoff.

I just bought some at 30 cents a pound. They call it "surplus" where I go.

$.50 - $.75 per pound for drops unless they're defective in some other way (starting to rust, welds in them, etc), at which point you can barter a bit. The more you buy, the cheaper it gets. Not the best price, but cheaper than full lengths cut down + cut charges.

I've rarely had trouble finding what I need after looking through all the drops at the steel yard I go to, they've got an extra building dedicated to them.

I'm pretty sure my steel supplier only charges for the amount I take with me. (I will be checking some receipts shortly haha)

He also charges full price for drops which ***** because I do a lot of small projects where I may want some little odd's and ends.

Ishiboo: Where do you get your steel from? I've gone to SI & Schuette, but I'm always looking for a better supplier.
One place I used to go to in Appleton no longer services "walk-ins" & no longer sells drop.

I assume you're referring to Appleton Steel?

Speedy Metals is my one stop shop for ferrous and non ferrous. Same or next day service and prices that can't be beat. Call in your order in the morning, pick up on your way home from work. No charge for cuts.

ishiboo, are you going to Fox Valley Iron in Oshkosh for this stuff?

I have always used Alro Steel, it used to be Block Iron. I use primarily angle and rectangular/square tube, the drops are primarily flats and round stock... and their drops are full-price. But for full pieces it's fine.

The scrap is well-priced, but it's not a great setup... the bins are probably 6x12, and there's a ton of **** on top, like I said you'll have probably 2000 lbs of stuff on top of the 2-3 decent pieces of structural you want, and no way to get to it.

Yeah, I was really surprised too... given the way it's set up, I think 19 cents is fair for both parties though.

No, I prefer new steel in decent condition so I've never really tried the scrap yards... I buy my steel from Alro. Their "scrap" is simply saw cut-offs.

Alro is local and cheaper than Speedy as I typically buy a full piece of steel for most stuff.

Seems really high for scrap, drops a bit too. I'm paying it looks like 71 cents a pound for new steel... at least, that's what the 4x3x.25 I just bought worked out to.

Yes, I was talking about Appleton Steel. I was only there once before they started their "no walk-ins" policy. Everything is supposed to be pre-ordered.
It's hard to "pre-order" steel if you are looking for drop. They did have a nice selection for being a smaller place.
I got some square tubing from Speedy metals once & they seemed Ridiculously overpriced. They also seemed to want pre-orders, as I probably waited an hour for 4 pieces of tube.
There is a newer place in Kaukana area called Liebovitch steel & it's a Big place, but I've never got anything from there yet.
I like Schuette steel, but they are 25 miles in the wrong direction for me.

I'll have to look into Alro if I go that way, but Appleton is most convenient for me.

You seem to always be scoring good deals scrap at the junkyard when you bring it in around here is .12 I believe. You are getting a screaming deal at .15.

I've always been curious what the yards pay, but everything I heard suggests steel prices have gone way down. I do know that a couple years back they quoted me $0.07-0.08 per pound on scrap vehicles, and $0.12ish on scrap steel...but that was when prices were higher. I would have to guess they are giving $0.10/lb for steel, not sure on aluminum. Same place charges $0.60/lb on clean aluminum, picked up a nice 2x6' piece of 1/4" aluminum plate for pretty cheap.
