Question for some of you guys that do body work. The project, I found a rust free box for my sons '76 GMC and am getting it ready to paint and install. The seam sealer in the box around the edges and over the wheel wells was dry and cracking so I pulled and ground it all out. After getting the paint done I plan to use a spray or roll in bed liner so appearance of the sealer is not real important. The question is what should I use for seam sealer and should it be brush on or from a caulking tube?

epoxy primer the bare metal then apply seam sealer, then top coat Use a 2 part non shrinking seam sealer
The auto store sells a specific product called seam sealer made specifically for the job at hand. Sorry its been to many years since I bought it to quote you a brand. It is a thick goo that you put on with a trowel or putty knife.

If you gonna use reall seam sealer, it should be done before paint.

As a rule when I'm doing a lap joint, I spray the inside of both sides with a weldable primer, weld it up, then use a caulk gun dispensed 3M product. Couldn't tell you the part number, but it's what Carquest has on the shelf.

3M Seam sealer is great stuff, use it all the time. It is white though, but it works great. Body shop supply houses have it.

Ain't cheap when you look at the price of a tube compared to latex window caulk ... but you're not caulking windows. That tube goes plenty far.
