I often wonder if there aren't "different" rules for lamps. They are constantly making different fixtures on HGTV shows and they make them out of old car parts and sell them for hundreds. Steampunk lamps can be found everywhere and none of those are listed.

I have been following this and thought it funny and great fun until I read the above quote. How can I think the NEC is a stupid waste and think it doesn't go far enough at the same time?

Anybody can make anything and sell it without a UL label, especially things like table lamps. So, if there's a different set of rules, its only for homemade vs. company made. It's just "buyer beware" without a UL label. And if your house burns down it's not likely that the guy who made the HGTV style lamp is going to have enough money to reimburse you or the insurance to cover you.

Me too, that is the neatest home made fuxture I have seen. Nice job. I used 3 double light bulb adapters (regular Leviton junk from HD) to hold four 100 watt equivalent LED, 4000K bulbs. I installed them in two sockets for a total of 8 bulbs. The two super bright clusters do the rear 2/3 of a 2 car garage as bright as I wanted. The area near the doors could use a little more. The advantage was a 5 minute installation and no more expensive than long led fixtures. I know there are 3, 4, 5, etc., multi bulb adapters availabe but the reviews are scary.

I think there might be different rules for portable devices, that plug in. I saw a lamp kit in lowes with a socket, harp and cord. I think it may only have to use listed devices, and even then, there is plenty of non UL or ETL listed junk sold. At any rate, it is not part of the building or hard wired to it, so it should have no effect on an inspection.
