I bought a single door to replace a sliding door in a pole barn that never worked. The door is a 9' x 7' (length x height). I RTFM and cannot find the size to make the framing rough-in.

I would measure the door and see if it's not over sized for the opening. If you cut the RO the same size as the door your going to have a hell of time sealing it up. Even if you can use a stop molding on your pole building, I would want the door to be larger than the opening so you have some overlap to help seal the door to the building.

I concur that usually the door is the exact size and they also usually recommend the RO be the same (exact) size. However...I found the following:

1) Height doesn't really matter, withinin a couple inches either way will be fine so just go with 7' even.
2) Width in my case could/should have been a 1.5" wider RO for the following reasons:
a) Transom windows above doors were designed for 1.5" wider RO to (my guess) account for trim on the garage doors, I did have 3/4" trim.
b) Trim on the doors is typically 3/4" per side and you usually add a brickmold/weatherstrip which will cover another 3/8 to 1/2" per side, thus, you can get 1.5" more clear opening and still seal if you are using a weatherstrip/brickmold on top of the trim board.
