Slab edges in rough shape

So I had a 24'x26' garage here at one point that was completely rotted out so I demoed it and am waiting for permits back to put up a 1sty garage in it's place. I'm having a little issue with figuring out how to deal with the concrete edges though. The slab has no footings and is 7 inches thick throughout.

Should I just make it a 23'x25' and put the walls on the slab further in or should I cut the perimeter and pour a foot by myself? Any ideas?

I would first discuss it with the building inspector for your town. See what they suggest.

Me... I would do footings all the way around... ( but don't listen to me... listen to the building inspector )

Lol I appreciate the advice. The building inspector is ok with using the "Existing foundation" without any modification but I don't think he realized that the existing walls were "recessed?" in the concrete. Is this how they used to build things back in the 70's? It was used as a storage garage for a tractor.

COOL.... then I might just form out the edge to give a clean edge and pour a few bags or order a yard or two delivered. Forms are easy... dealing with a hurried cement truck driver is not... get a few peoples to help with wheel barrels ... NO NEED For footings too cool.

Read in the other thread... it's going to be rebuilt as 1 story 10'... can't wait to see the progress.

EDIT... actually I looked at the pictures again... on a real monitor... only that one spot is wonky... might be able to fix that with 2 x 90pound bags.

I read somewhere on here that anything under 11 feet would be fine on a floating slab and I think my town is ok with it because there was an existing structure already there. It was a flat roof. I'm trying to find pictures of it before I tore it down.

I'll take more pictures later to show what it looks like.

That spot thats really lifted is actually where the garage door will be. So I don't even have a wall going there.

Honestly I'm not sure I'd build a costly new structure on that slab at all. There is nothing wrong with a floating or monolithic slab for a detached building but it needs to be adequate for the task. I'm not sure yours is. Just because the building inspector is OK with it doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Recessed walls means it was a dirt floor and the concrete was poured later. Not uncommon in some areas expically when a tractor shed is converted to a garage.

Personally I would trim the edge of that slab a bit and pour footings. Then you know what you have and it is the size you want

Ah - That is going to be a fun project. If I knew I was going to be putting footings in I feel like I should have also invested on a 2nd floor. It is unfortunate because from my non professional analysis the slab looks like it's in OK shape.

Funny that I didnt realize it before but the way the posts were "concreted in" makes sense now that the slab came after the building.

I feel like its not worth it to pour concrete for 1 extra foot. If I was just to fill in those notched out areas (like the corners) what do you think I should do it with? Putting concrete in the 6 inch cutout doesnt seem like a great idea.

Yea... I would drill into the ends and insert rebar for the corners... OR... cut a sono tube to round off the corners... but dig it like 18 inches deep... that might finish off the corners... OR... just build on the inside of that imaginary line... so you will have a ledge around the outside... easy peeezy.

Bury some flower pots in the corners... for daisy's

I'd use as is, but pour a short stem wall, say 8"-12" high and 6-8" thick all the way around. Drill a few holes for rebar pins to tie it to the floor and epoxy them in place. Then run a rebar or two inside the form. strengthens the edge and keep water off the building.

I guess filling in the corners would be the best bet.

As for level eh not so 100%. There are some small dips here and there. It's also pitched towards where the doors used to be. The new design has the garage door being where the man door is on the picture.

So I got an angle grinder this weekend and grinded down that one really high point and "tried" to make some forms for concrete.

I can easily say this is my least favorite thing I've ever done.

I also made a driveway this weekend for the garage. I know people usually do the driveway last but I figured it would be easier to have it done so the concrete truck and lumber delivery have something to drive on.
