Who's done it? Whats your opinion? I'm considering buying a small, used skidsteer, Gehl 3510, runs on gas, the guy wants $4,000 for it. I have a total of 4 hours expierience driving one, shoveling snow. I want build a 24' x 32' apron. If most of the cost is prep work, I figured I could do that. Plus my driveway, 450' long with a 40' x 60' parking area/turn around, needs to be dug up and regravelled, not too mention a slue of other things; some grading, a patio, knock down old stone barn walls. Is it worth it, would this model be up to the task? Or would I be better off renting a nice shiny new one? Or am I all wrong and let the pros do it so I don't screw things up?

I backfilled my entire foundation for my house with a Gehl. Not sure of the model, but it worked good. Slow, but it worked.
You could always sell it when you're done and it would still be cheaper than renting one.

The small number of hours you'll put on a piece of equipment like that, will have no noticable effect on value, you can probably turn around and sell it for exactly what you paid for it. Provided you don't have to repair anything, buying a used one, using it, and reselling it, will cost you next-to-nothing.

What about rental? I rented the mini excavator and skid steer for doing my garage foundation. I got it over the weekend and the place only charged the hours I used. And it was delivered and picked up. I saved about $2k doing the work myself (this is net savings, as I still paid for rental, fuel and supplies).
