slide hammers?

Alright School me on slide hammers my Old 3.5 pounder has been welded up before and she Just blew apart on a Wheel bearing tonight need a replacement for her. So here Is the criteria made in America at least 3.5 pounds more the merryier though and hopefully something with a few attacements included under 150$ Is This possible?

I might be wrong, but going American on this is kinda of a waste in my op. They are to simple a tool to make a serious difference. That said I would spend more getting quality puller attachments from the USA. If your dead set on buying American u could go Snap on, but it will cost more than you budget although used is alway an option.

Back to reality. I use that size puller for cotter pins and keyways ... For bearings, hubs and similar jobs I like 5lb min take a look at the OTC set or Silver ******* you can go up to 10 or 12lbs if your in need of more power...

7/10 times I go right for the 12lbs, I don't have to used it to its full potential...

I'd get OTC, like the above guy mentioned. A heavier one tho, as he also stated. Probably right above your price.

Okay so after my brief online research and comments from you guys I see american is not happening at my budget so otc is pretty much the winner? I'm just hoping for something that has better steel then the pot metal princess auto job I got on sale for 30$ is made out of lmao and I agree bigger is better mines actually 4.5 pounds looking at it however I've gotten by with this one for a couple years their have been times I wish I had a 15 pounder though. Any other brands to consider? Thanks

Most of them are just going to be copies of the OTC set. Oem, Neiko and plenty of others import stuff similar. The otc has the following because their name is more well known... It should accomplish everything your looking to do. They are well built far better then the Chinesium from HF/PA...

OTC, S&G tool aide, Power-tec/Snap on. Make 10lbs and up models they usually are marketed towards body work. They will cost more and you may need to purchase adapters that did not come with... These sometime use different size thread so be aware not all pullers may be compatible with out a coupler.

Pullers are one of those tool categories were its very easy to spend big bucks $$$$....

I made my own. Mostly from dumpster finds.
The red rod at the bottom of the pic shows what I started with. Both ends have cold rolled 5/8" fine thread. I have no idea what they were for originally. The slide came from a machine that compressed asphalt samples into pucks for testing. It was in the dumpster at my job site.



Nut and flat washer welded on for the stop.



This a crimp fitting for hydraulic hose. I use these to weld different ends onto.



Most pullers fit the end as well.



An end I made to pull a drive axle I couldn't get loose any other way.

OTC, GearWrench, Craftsman, even Harbor Freight's new 'Maddox' brand (and many other brands also) 10-way (16 pc) slide hammer sets are all identical.

Have a look at the Morgan slide hammers. A guy I work with has one and I find myself stealing it often to use over my Mac. The Morgan rides on a larger diameter pipe instead of a smaller solid rod most seem to use, for some reason this seems to transfer force better. The hooks it comes with are good quality too. Bonus points they are made in the USA.
