Engraving is bad enough. But why weld the screws to the head?

Homemade FOD ratchet?![]()
Homemade FOD ratchet?![]()
thats a shame......that makes it go from a $25 ratchet to a $.99 throw away.

What the heck is FOD?
Footnote:
*This ratchet is designed to help prevent foreign object damage in sensitive work environments. The coverplate and reverse lever are permanently affixed to the ratchet head with rivets to prevent the chance of small parts debris.
I can understand why it was done, I'm mostly laughing at some of the reactions people are having about it.Bingo. Why not? Take a cheap ratchet, weld the screws down, don't have to buy a new $75 one. I would do it if I needed one.
What work enviroments use FOD tools?
Now that I know what FOD is, I am going to guess that, for example, mechanics working in the desert probably want a tightly sealed ratchet head.

Well that is my ratchet. I purchased it off eBay and the jackass that sold it to me did not say anything about the bolts being welded. When I got the ratchet in I did not know what the hell to think. I tried to return the ratchet to him with no luck, I just decided I would try to sell it but let the people know about the damage.
Check out the link to when I bought it.....nothing about the **** he did to it.

You should dispute it with Paypal, why let the POS get away with it? At least leave him a bad feedback.
If I had to make it a FOD ratchet I would have tacked it on the plate side.![]()
I agree. I mean, he only gave one pic, of the unwelded side, and the description says nothing about the modification, just that these are surplus and might have certain types of issues (welding slag not being one of them). I think that is BS, and he's got a 100% feedback rating that he does not deserve.

Ok, NOW I finally get what FOD tools are designed to do. I only skimmed the info the first time around.
About the eBay seller: if he takes the time to grab a ratchet and snap a pic for the auction, how can he NOT see that one side has welding slag on it? And, is it coincidence that he showed a pic only of the side where you can't see the mod? If you are going to show just one pic, it is more natural to show the top of the ratchet!
I would fight the transaction, contact PP, eBay, CC company, whatever. He is in the wrong.
Thats why I ask questions first(even ask for extra pictures) or walk away.
If I buy mac or snap-on or craftsman tools(something that I can return if need be) I ask the seller whether or not the dealer would take it back no questions asked and give me a refund or a new tool. If he says "no" or "I dont know" I walk.
If its too good to be true....

I don't see any slag on it anywhere, maybe some filler metal but no slag.
To me it looks like a tool that got the job done. If you ever need to rebuild it so you spend a couple of extra minutes drilling and maybe grinding and its close enough to a 1/4" ******* ratchet for rebuilding and use. But, then again I generally buy tools to use and not to fantasize about.
