For those of you with 40k+ who also spend an additional 4-5k per year, what are you getting for that money that you didn't already have, and are those new tools paying for themselves or do they just make work a little more enjoyable?

I understand spending a few hundred on a tool that saves time on a frequently done job, but I would think after 40k+ you would already have bought those tools.

Don't get me wrong, I am not being critical, but rather I am honestly curious as to what new tools you are getting at that point in your career.

Id say for me it's somewhere in the middle of those areas mentioned. There's stuff that I buy just because it will make that one job, once in while, go a little easier, which in turn make the work more enjoyable (or in some cases just more bearable). There's other stuff I get because there is just no way I would get the job done in a reasonable time without them. Those tools definately pay for themselves, usually in the first use. These things continue to change over time. No matter what you work on, I think there will always be design changes that will keep this aspect of tool buying alive, and IMO, lead to the techs who eventually end up with a $100k set of tools.

Its just like everything else in Life...Guys like New stuff, No different than buying the 1080P Tv because your 780P is Older, spending 5K to drop your 1/4 mile time by a tenth of a second.. etc..etc... Do you need any of these items to get the Job done? Probably not but it makes the Experience more enjoyable or Easier.

A 15k toolbox doesn't do much for me, one I use cost 75 used and I equip my whole shop for 86k. If I needed it I might spring 1500 for a tool box.
