Who makes the nicest snap ring/retaining ring plyer set, money is not a big deal since my home insurance is paying for it.

With snap ring pliers the simpler the better.
Interchangeable tips and fancy pushbutton mechanisms to change from inside to outside rings are just there to frustrate you.
The simple blackhawk has been the millwright staple for many years

Is Blackhawk the OEM? I've got that type pliers with a bunch of different names on 'em.
Agreed the fancier pliers are nothing but un-necessary bulk and aggravation.

I have the Cornwell ML43R 12 Piece Conventional Retaining Ring Plier Set. They are USA made by Milbar, pretty simple, not much to go wrong:

ohhh I do like the Knipex ones. I hate the pressed steel kind that can be switched, they're too flexible and the pivot screws always come apart. Waste of money.
Also removeable tips as mentioned are a waste of time.
I've spent $100s on snap-ring pliers over the years to work on transmissions and motorcycles and very few are worth the money. The c-man professional type that switches with the lever are the best of that type but I would rather have something like those Knipex ones.

the more that i look at the knipex ones the more i like them. the ones that i had before were proto pro's and they were well made just to complicated to use on a regular basis.

I have the Snap-On 12 pc set and the Craftsman 12 pc set. I bought the Craftsman after I thought my Snap-Ons had walked away. In quality there isn't 2 cents worth of differance. The Snap-Ons are 3X as much. As long as the insurance company is paying it get the Snap-On. If it was me and I could make it happen I'd make my insurance company buy me a set that went up in the space shuttle.

It all depends on what you're willing to spend. As others have said, Knipex is the best, but Imperial makes these good pliers for the tool trucks, Proto and Sears and in most cases, is okay for less money.

i have never used the knipex ones but i can say that the forged snap on's are far better than anything stride makes.

I strugled with horrible changable tips for a while; and I couldnt decide which better ones (set) to get so I bought these (below) just to hold me over, and must say I am very happy with their build for the $. Once I get a better set the Irwin's will go to a travel or loaner box. I am considering the 12 pc Sears ($100) or the 8 pc Knipex ($134) set at this time.

Picked these off of CL for $20. RJ = R. Jung which is a subsidiary of Stahlwille. Very comfortable, excellent quality and work great!

Those look sweet, the 4-piece on Amazon UK is less than half the price of the six piece though, and you don't even want to know about the NZ price! lol
