with construction adhesive? I see them use boatloads of it, or some other adhesive on DIY all the time. What gives? I thought we were trying to use stuff with little or no VOCs? Or did I miss something in the make up of these new adhesives? I can barely stand to use silicone caulk with it's fumes. I'm just kinda trying to figure why it seems like every show on DIY is using consruction adhesive(aside from the fact they're being paid to).

Construction adhesive is pretty useful. But, I'd guess the DIY shows use it as insurance when slapping together the **** that they do.

Adhesive has its places. But the DIY shows use it and caulking more than I'd ever be comfortable with. Basically, use it as added insurance, not a band-aid for poor design or poor quality workmanship. For instance, as insurance, I typically run a bead of it across each joist before nailing subfloor down to prevent squeaks.

It's more than just insurance. It is an essential element of certain construction methods, such as the TJI Silent Floor system as you allude to. As you stated, it has its places, and is probably overused. Long drywall screws are another thing that get way overused as well, IMHO. They too have a place in construction, but have virtually no shear strength, and need to be used cautiously in framing and load bearing applications.

I just used a whole bunch making headers for garage doors, man doors and windows - adhesive between the 2 x's and plywood spacers, along with nails of course.

So it sounds like I stick with my #14x4" wood scews for building storage shelves...

When attaching things made out of glue and saw dust together it is the only way to go. As soon as you drill or poke a hole in that stuff if loses all of it's strength. If it had any to begin with.

That's why I don't use MDF, or plywood for anything meant to hold any weight
