Soldering v JB Weld

Homeowner DIY guy here.

Can someone tell me what is stronger, putting two pieces of metal together, JB weld or Soldering?

This is for a hinge on an outdoor swimming pool pump timer cover.

Steel? Aluminum? **** Joint? Overlapped?

It's an electrical timer box for the pool pump. I presume it's steel. The two hinges on the cover have rusted out completely and the cover is currently just press fit onto the box. Id like to put 2 new small door hinges back on.

It's not a **** joint. I'm not sure what an overlap joint is.

The old hinges had one side attached on the outside of the box, and the other side on the inside the cover. I thought I would just copy the same. I'm using a hinge that has 2 plates 1/2" x 1.5" that could either JB weld, solder, or screw into place. Or all 3. I'm kind of wary about using the screws since the box has some electrical wires and moving parts in close proximity.

If you insist on repair vs replacement I would go the JB Weld route. The stuff is amazing.

What about riviting it in place?

Pop rivets or sheet metal screws.


If it's rusted out, maybe you should think about replacing it with a plastic box.

IMHO screwing it is the easiest option, you don't have to clean off all the rust and prepare the surfaces then clamp in place to dry. Just drill four holes, put screws threw, into nuts. Using a nylock nut wont allow it to vibrate loose and short anything inside the box.

I had JB Weld on a cylinder head for seven years, I forgot it was on there until we went to rebuild it, great stuff!

JB weld saved my S twice:
1. Aluminum oil pan on International motor (DT466). Temperature goes up and down, obviously expending and contracting. Vibrating when engine is running. Crack was about 5-7 inches long. "V" grooved, drilled holes on the ends of crack. Cleaned oil and stuff with carburetor cleaner. Still holding after 2 years.

2. Radiator leak on my plow truck during this 2,000 mile storm. Radiator pan on IHC-2674 L10 Cummins. Hole rusted about size of $0.25. Sanded around hole about 1/2 inch. Cut stainless steel hose clamp to make a "structure". Put JB Weld on edges, stick my"structure" to it. Put more JB Weld on top. After 1 hour truck was back on route. Because of JB Weld I did not lose 50 hours plowing shift. 2 Moths still holding.

Other words I truly believe in JB Weld, It is grate material. Make sure to get a lots of CLEAN surface to bind. Make sure it's cured before disturbing.
