Some Gas Grill Help

I might regret this (I was thinking that I would get a lecture on the benefit of charcoal or a smoker) But I want to replace my Stainless steel gas grill. I have a Charm glow (Home Depot). it is about 5 years old and the burners are rotted. I know they can be repaired but at 100 bucks a burner (X3) I don't think it is worth it.

What is a good Brand?

Last summer I got a weber E310 for the wife and she loves it.

I'll stick to my Charcoal "Danger men cooking" setup

Weber and you won't regret it. They are more expensive then what you can get normally at Depot but they are well worth the cost. Get one that has 3 burners and you'll be set for life, well at least a very long time. I've had mine for over 10 years now. I've had to replace the ignitor & flavorizer bars once, everything else is rock solid on it. Check them out.

When I bought my house, I bought a Weber Genesis and I'm loving it. It's awesome for larger grilling tasks, but if I'm grilling just a steak or two, it takes a little longer to heat up. I got the one with a side burner, which is surprisingly useful for boiling stuff in the summer so one doesn't heat up the house any more than necessary.

My parents had a Weber that lasted them about 20 years that I grew up with.

They're not the cheapest, but they're quite nice--the Weber Spirit is smaller and gets hotter faster if the Genesis is too big. Ducane is made by the same company: they're still well built, just not as featured/fancy.

Sorry to say another WEBER follower here too, a gas unit (Genesis Silver C model) we bought back in the 90's! And it works great today, of course I look at the newer ones and think wow, these are made cheaply...

Lately been considering a smoker too and heard wonderful things about a smoker called an Orion cooker

Ducane is made by the same company: they're still well built, just not as featured/fancy.

If you get the old design Ducane they may be good. But don't get the newer ones that are designed by Weber. They are a POS in my opinion. This Stainless Ducane is only a few years old before we replaced it with the WEBER.

It didn't cook worth a darn, but when I retired it I finally found an appropriate use for it. (A backstop for my plinking setup)

IMHO Yes!

The E310 that I own is $699 right now at lowes. I got it on sale during 4th of july weekend. The box stores put the grills on sale almost every labor day, memorial day, and forth of july weekends.

I was going to mock you for letting you wife grill. That was until I scrolled down and saw your three grill set up. No mocking from me.

I am a third generation basic Weber guy. My dad just replaced the one he used for my entire child hood, no idea how long he had it.

Mock if you will, but I can't cook worth a damn, so the wife does all the grilling. We have a detente.....I stay out of the kitchen (including not using her knives as screwdrivers, fingernail scrapers or package openers) and she stays the hell out of the shop.

We have a 15 year old Broil King - aluminum box with stainless burners and racks that I set up to run on the house natural gas, IIRC it cost about $700 when new. Till this year the only thing I've ever replaced are the SS wire racks and the lava rocks, but this fall I noticed the thing moving around when I touched it, and I found the post and base to be rusted thru and hangin on by a thread. For $50 I got new parts directly from the MFR who's still in bidness and it's good for another 15 years. By then I'll be so old I doubt I'll be able to chew!

Bottom line, if you use it a lot (we grill all year round, even in the snow) paying for a good quality unit will be worth it in the long run. Buying cheap means you buy it again.....and again......and again.....

However, if you like to change things up periodically, a cheap one might be the better way to go.....

The good thing about hooking it up to the house gas supply is that you never run out of propane mid way thru your cooking. But there's a downside too.....
We almost always grill on Sunday evening as we did one summer evening - the next weekend she asked me to fire it up and I went to turn it on and found it already at temp! Yep, she left it on all week! Cost about an extra $60 on the gas bill that month, which wasn't too bad but it was summer time - if it had been winter it might have been an extra $100. The bad thing, a few weeks later she did it again! This time I caught it the next day as it rained and I noticed steam coming off the top. You've been warned......

For years I cooked on a charcoal Weber. About 5 years ago, I was given a gas grill (no name) and have been converted. I still use the old Weber for certain things (turkey or pork roast; low heat).

This year bought a Weber S310 (stainless steel). I got a good deal, even with shipping, from Rainbow Appliance. The stainless one is about $100 more that the other one. They charge extra for a side burner, so decide if you really want one.

Also, in 2011 they moved the controls from the side to the front. Any place with the old model (side controls) should be giving good discounts.

I've been wanting to get a Traeger for a while now. I haven't heard one person complain that owns one. I just can't imagine shelling out $800 + for a grill. BUT I WANT ONE!

another vote for weber...got the silver C about 11 years ago and it keeps on keeping on...the left hinge pin burned through a few years ago (hot 'q), but not a problem. Probably used 200-250 times a year and not covered.

I just cleaned out the BBQ a couple of weeks ago (Char-Broil 4-burner + side burner). Looks like a may have to do the same thing. 3 of my 4 reflector pans are rusting out, and the same for the burners.

I would hate to junk this one considering what we paid for it. If it goes, the replacement will be smaller. Heck, it might even be charcoal.

Am I wrong or are some of these manufactures warranties lifetime in nature, might be worth checking out befor giving up on it.

The wife and I decided to upgrade our gas grill for Christmas this year. We're looking at the Weber Genesis e330. Looks like a nice grill with side burner and sear station. At $799 its a bit pricy but considering that we cook @1/2 our meals on the grill I think its money well spent.
We looked at Ducane and found that they have been outsourced overseas and the qaulity shows. Holland grills are still made stateside but I dont like the single heat burner . Anyone have any other options we should consider?

Absolutely.

We have a five burner stainless grille from Lowes that is of course one of those off-brand, made in China grilles. It looks nice, but the burners are **** and are slowly rotting away. It doesnt' cook evenly and flares up like crazy. It's four years old and probably cost $500 at the time of purchase. It has a lifetime warranty on the burners, but finding where to go to honor that warranty is like getting blood from a turnip. Lowes isn't the contact.

My dad has a ten-year old Weber Summit gold and it never flares up, cooks very evenly, and the burners were like new when we took it apart for cleaning a couple of months ago.

I have a char broil commerical series it came with life time warranty on the grates and the burners they get replaced every 2 years. Being in florida I use this thing almost daily the wife and I eat at differant times and by cooking on the grill I don't have to worry about making a mess in her kitchen

I run a 3 burner Broil King... a little old school, but very heavy and well made with a deep cooking tray...The heavy case construction makes it excellent for cooking out in the cold weather.....very happy

My dad has a Napoleon Gemini...very well made big *** grill that does well in colder weather

As a general rule I avoid grills made with thin stainless construction as I do not feel they store heat well enough for grilling in the winter time......

As others have said Weber is top notch....Both my dad and myself have had Webers over the years....

I have 2 Kenmore's with ceramic lids and cast iron burners. Same one at the House and the Lake. They have worked flawlessly for more than 6 years. I leave them both out in the weather. I also have a Bubba Keg ( Now Big Steel Keg) - uses lump charcoal. Made a steak on it the other day and I don't think I will grill steaks any other way from now on!

My "generic" grill is almost dead after 4 years. I am on my third set of heat spreaders/deflectors ($75) and second set of grills ($50). I'm not saying Weber grills are indestructible, but they last longer than that !

Did you check prices at Rainbow Appliance.com ? Prices range from $479 (model E310, basic 3 burner) to $1675 (S670, stainless, 6 burners, plus side burner, plus smoker box and burner, plus rotisserie and burner, plus sear burner) . Shipping is extra, but not that bad

$100 a burner seems really expensive.

I just picked up a used Kenmore stainless NG grill that was in really good condition except the burners were also rotted to nothing.
The factory style burners were about $30-50 a pop and I needed 5
Well that wasn't gonna happen. I ended up finding a 5 pack of generic burners for about $25 but they were a little longer than the originals.
Ended up modifying them to looks like the originals and they are working just fine.

Just thought I'd throw it out there in case you want to try and salvage your old grill.

Another webber fan here.. I have a Summit NG grill... plumbed into the house (sitting on the deck). Get a good quality grill (and cover) and it'll hold up a lot longer than those crappy $300 grills.

Weber charcoal for me. I have a gas grill I got for free and my dad gave me a full propane tank to use with it. I used it until the propane ran out and haven't gone back. That was about 3 years ago and I grill at least twice a week no matter the weather.

I also have a smoker that I love but have gotten lazy about using it. Did two briskets last Christmas and another later in the year, but haven't touched it since. I really need to fire that puppy up now that it's almost cold down here.

One thing that I hate about propane grills is they heat up so fast, I'll be done cooking and only had time to drink a beer or two.

If you get the old design Ducane they may be good. But don't get the newer ones that are designed by Weber. They are a POS in my opinion.

I have a Ducane 1600 that has served me for ten years. I'd recommend it but Ducane went out of business oh, about ten years ago.

Weber bought the name and passed it from the Rolls-Royce of grills to **** from China so cheap they were embarrassed to put their own name on it. Like buying BMW and slapping the blue-and-white on Yugos. I've had more people react badly when I say I have a Ducane than I can count, either because they had a Weberized one or because they took two minutes to look one over at HD. (Hint: if it's the cheapest grill HD sells, you might want to look elsewhere.)

I don't much care for Webers, never did, and because of this brainless stunt I wouldn't consider one under any circumstances. They're the GM of grill makers - 50 models, everybody sells them, and optimized for their price point. Nothing I'd care to cook on.

I've been wanting to get a Traeger for a while now. I haven't heard one person complain that owns one. I just can't imagine shelling out $800 + for a grill. BUT I WANT ONE!

Those Treagers are very good smokers, but for doing a small amount of meat or whatever, its kind of expensive.

You have to buy the pellets to produce the smoke and heat. To get it up to temp, run it long enough to cook what ever, really need to have a bunch of stuff on the grill to make it worth while.

At least that's the way it seems to me. Other wise I love mine, if you get one make sure you get the temp gauge option, nice to see from the outside what the temp is on the inside.

I've also had a Weber for a long as I can remember, probably 15 years, works as good as the day I bought it. My Sunbeam I had before this was always needing new burners, about every three years or so.

I nolonger have it. I will have to get it. fxing It was my first thought. I dont know enought about grill to hump up the burners (atleast that was my thought)
