I started doing the clean-up on the sb I picked up a few years ago.Its been sitting in the shop and today is the first I have looked at it.I knew the cast iron conduit between the starter and the switch was broken but whats inside it is puzzeling to me.It seems that there are 2 starters in line. The first one off the motor is mounted on the base. The (broken) conduit goes up to a start/stop switch. But then a bundle of wires run out of this switch and go into what I believe was the original start/stop/reverse switch,then back to this start/stop switch. Inside the old start/stop/reverse switch houseing is what looks like another motor starter. So there is now no provision for reversing the motor and two starters? What is all this?

Not knowing the history of the machine, I would venture a guess that the original reversing switch (or contactor) has been replaced by the AB relay. Not sure if the system as it is now is capable of reversing the motor. The other "starter" is just that. It has the overloads and provides the "machine" power.

The machine operation circuit should include a master power switch, main power contactor w/ overloads, an on/off/reverse station and a reversing contactor. Other items could include a on/off light switch.

I think what I would do is start at the motor and work out removing or changing as needed. Looks like a bit of overkill to me

Seems like the logical thing to do.I just cant figure out why the drum switch was replaced with a relay. It probably was done when the motor was changed out to single phase.The motor looks new,its the only clean part on the machine!

Is it even a reversing motor??? Not any mention of a motor change out in your op.

Motor was in place when I got it. I was told it was changed out to single phase,but it was a few years ago and I really dont remember the conversation.I wouldnt have bought it if it was 3 phase,but for $500 I took it home.It has a 3 and 4 jaw chuck,taper att, a nib faceplate with the 200$ cod tag still on it,3 point and 2 point steady rests,4 position tool holder, and a dial readout on the x. There are 4 leads comming out of the motor,so I would say it is reversible. Motor plate is on the bottom of the motor about 6" off the ground.I am going to stick my camera down there and try to get a readable pic.

Got an old Rockwell lathe that started life as 480 vac 3 phase. It has a drum switch for reversing. At 480 vac the current was low enough for the switch contacts to handle but when I switched to 240 vac single phase motor the current was way to high for the contacts. I installed a reversing contactor and use the drum switch to control the contactors. 8 wire motor if I remember correctly and 5 & 8 had to be switched for reverse.

I think I fixed it,at least tempoarily! I'm just going to figure out a new setup,that was" too much monkey bussiness" (as Chuck would have said).

OK,all you motor wireing experts,here is the data plate on the motor.Is it reversable? If so how? how to do this with a simple drum switch? I dont see a need for a starter on a 1 hpmotor.
