What the hell? I'm seeing more & more late night spammin on this site. Looks like about 5 at the same time tonight, from India to boot. So how are these guys getting on? Is there a way to keep 'em off?

The problem with SPAM is across many forums. Some forum admins can manage manual sign up of new members but here on the GJ and the HAMB that is not possible.

For those not on Ryans other forums you may like to read these links to the HAMB.

I have posted something very similar here to this about replies and reporting spammers >

Replies on Spam Threads

Please dont.

The Threads are easier to Delete when there are no replies on it.

And if we'd miss the fact that it has a reply on it, the User who replied could accidently get a lifetime Spammer Ban.
( which can all be reversed, but there could be a loss of posted pics, etc.
And it would be a lot of hassle )

So dont post "Reported", or start messing with the low life Spammer.

As tempting as it is...

But please do keep Reporting them.

Thanks.

and this is a reply that Ryan posted that may explain more >

They chose names/subjects that a wide range of people recognize in hopes of getting clicks. Some more sophisticated spammers actually do market research on what the general population clicks on.

In any case, they take this information and spam say 100,000 message boards with these links. These links are tied to affiliates and these spammers get around $.01 for each click through they send to these links (often times **** sites or just ****** e-commerce stuff). A typical click through rate is about 1%. So, if they get 100,000 links out there, they stand to make $1000 each time.

There are spammers that post millions of links a day. It's huge money.

I am sure Ryan will not mind that I have copied all this over from the HAMB to help explain more to those of us here on the GJ.

Remember the GJ (and the HAMB) may be run by Ryan but we all can contribute to helps stop the spam and how we enjoy the forum(s).

Spam is, spam does...

It is hard to weed out all of the SpamBots. They are programmed smarter and smarter every time. Some of them on a site I moderate have been members for years then just all of a sudden pop up as spam. Some SpamBots are just hacking old accounts too. They are all over the place. Just part of Forums. Only so much you can do about it.

i report a lot of spam, probably as much as everyone else who visits here.
i'm probably reporting spam that someone else already reported.
usually a spammer posts multiple times, as long as i report at least one, i know the rest will be removed from that spammer.
i wouldn't say it's overwhelming or intrusive to my visits.. i see it because i'm an early riser in the US eastern time zone.
but i will say, i do see a lot of threads started just to chat about spam.. just saying.

I'm a late nighter and it's usually just a couple of us real posters and the rest are spammers. I report every different one I see and move on. Its real easy to pick them out at that time since there are relatively few real posts bumped after 2am.

If they have mutliple posts just report the one post and in that report say they have multiple posts. Will make it easier for you.
