Spray Foam Insulation Quote

I had an insulation contractor out today to give me a quote on spraying the underside of my shop roof/ceiling. Approximately 1,300 sq ft to a depth of 3.5". Quote for open cell was $1.75 sq ft and $2.00 sq ft for closed cell. Does this sound right? Contractor is highly regarded locally and recommended by several knowledgeable friends.

In my area, that sounds high for the open cell and low for the closed cell. Rates here two years ago were $.35 sf per inch of thickness for open cell and $.85 for closed cell per inch of thickness.

Compare the R values and you should see the value in the closed cell quote. I would question why only a difference of $.25 per sf when the closed is nearly twice the R value of open.

The other advantage of closed over open is that in that thickness, closed provides its' own vapor barrier.

I would say at $2.00/sf for 3.5" you have found a bargain. Not so much on the open cell.

I always "heard" a contractor is cheaper than do it yourself......so?

The only way you will know the answer is to get other bids from (1) spray foam contractors in your area or (2) spray foam contractors willing to travel to your area.

I just paid approximately $2.10/ sq foot for the same thickness (although it ended up being more than 3.5in in most of the area). This is in Mid Michigan and closed cell. I had the whole upstairs done in my garage so there was additional material in the corners and soffits which somewhat affected the cost.
Sounds like a good deal to me.
