Hi,
Was given this and hope to refurb it.

It is 3 Phase 220V.

Wondering if anyone has worked on anything similar?

It looks as if the power wire comes out the bottom of the Switch in front, which seems strange?

Switch is an Allen Bradley 709AAA1A,

Hi,
Thanks, I heard the AB Switches are the Cadillac of Motor Switches!

What is the best way to clean it, Contact Cleaner?

Spray it down, blow it out?

It also seems the Power Cord comes in from the bottom of the switch box, down the front, and held by a clamp you can see in the pic?

Seems weird, but?

Contact Cleaner, and Burnishing Tool for the Contact Points.

No, cant See It, but Power cord can route any place you wish. Previous owner probably had a floor wire raceway, or raised floor, and he/she wanted to keep it out of out of the way.

Looks like a kludge, based on paint job, IMO.

Suspect the power came in thru the hole in the bottom visible under the switch. Is there a notch or hole in the back of the pedestal? Seems like a cleaner entry point than conduit in the front of the machine.

Some hints, no exposed conduit on the front

Hi,
Yes, I have looked at every Pic I could find and do not see one of these Grinder/Buffers set up like this one???

No Holes ANYWHERE in the Pedestal Base.

Why would the Clamp be there if not to hold the Power Wire???

There is a knock out hole in bottom of Switch Box, for Power Wire, but no where else?

Every other one of these seem to have a small built in switch like the smaller Bench Grinders???

Interesting!

Looking at pedestal grinders in general, not just Standard Electric, I noticed very few pics showed the back end of the pedestal, but one or two that did had a power cord coming out there. Notice this one comes out of a square plate with a round hole in it. This looks like a modern install.

I'm guessing someone added it when they ran the power wire out the front.

You can't help it your switch is much cooler, or a different replacement, than theirs.

Crud, just saw this hole circled in purple, guess that is wire your wiring came in, after running up the front of the machine. Personally, I'd try to route it out the backside, and come around the corner, to keep the cord away from my feet, but that's just me. Similar to the hole in the bottom of the box, depending on which way the wires can attach to the switch, that would be an option too.

Hi,
Thanks, I better see if it even runs before I get to deep.

It is suppose to, but...

Easy enough to hook up a plug and try it.

If it runs, I'm going to completely tear it apart and refurb it.

Hi,
Saw this pic. and looked at the back of my Grinder.

There is a lip that I could fabricate (weld) up a plate and fasten to the rear with screws...

And mount the Switch Box on that.

I would have to splice in longer wires to the Motor wires that attach to the Switch and run those in greenfield conduit.

Is there any problem extending those motor wires another 2 feet?

I would also have to drill a 3/4" hole to bring out the wires, but...

That would put everything behind the face of the grinding wheels.

LOOKS GOOD !! I would leave it where it is, but just my Personal Preference. I think you want to show off your A/B Mag Starter, and Nothing Wrong with That Either. You can mount it wherever you wish, just try to keep it out of the line of fire for Work, and Grinding Debris, and easy access for "Quick Emergency Shutoff".

Take Care,

Hi,
Thanks, I'm going to see if it runs tomorrow.

I can hear a rough bearing just spinning it by hand!

It will be a project, but...

Hi,
Well, got into it a little today...

Took my VOM and did a continuity test between the 3 windings, and...

Came up with 8.1 ohms between all 3 in relation to each other, so...

Hooked up power and it would not run.

The Starter Switch would hum when the start button was pushed and held, but nothing else.

The Switch is full of old dust so will take pics and notes and disconnect everything and see if I can clean it, and do a inspection for obvious problems.

If anyone has troubleshoot these old Starters, I'm all ears!

Hi,

Pulled the leads and straight wired the Grinder and it started but did not come up to speed.

Switched leads till I assume I had main legs from RPC on L1 and L2, and the grinder came up to speed and ran very nicely, has a rumbling Bearing, but it runs!

Did not want to put time and energy in the AB 709 AAA1A Switch if the grinder was shot.

Anyone with experience on these old Starters have any advice on repair, I'm all ears.

Will try and clean the Switch next and see if I can find any obvious damage.
