Strange hand drill?

This was in my latest grab bag of tools. I cant figure out what it is. I was thinking maybe used for rock climbing? But I cant find another like it out on google, and 9/16ths seems too big for that. Anybody have any ideas? The only markings I can find on it are a diamond shaped logo on the drill bit, and on the grip. And a 9/16th in the drill bit. The drill bit is fixed / pressed into the handle. It doesnt appear to be removable.

an early hammer drill? -- rotate slowly while tapping with a hammer?
-- look at the end of the bit.. the pic looks like a modern style metal cutting bit, but maybe you can find other hints of wear and tear..

It looks like a morse taper drill and with that slot just below the handle you should be able to put a wedge in there and free the bit out.

It looks like a hand impact driver for concrete.

My first thought as well. No idea what the handle is for...

Looks like someone just stuck a handle on morse taper.

Hand driven masonary drills are called star drills. they don't have a helical flute.

No, never seen one of those. That it has been used enough to have mushroomed the driver end is proof it was a working tool, but for what?

Possibly for rock climbing. The handle could be from black diamond (used to be choinard - now with patagonia). Wrong drill in it, though. Use a morse taper wedge to drive that drill out of the handle.

That is a early hammer drill, remember seeing them at work years ago. You had different size drills with the same size shank that fit in the handle and you would use a drift in the slot in the handle to get the bit out.
