speedy four-way lug wrench for changing race car tires
I was there back in the day before air or batteries in the pits and never saw one of those. Doesn't mean it wasn't used to change race car tires. I just never saw it used.

It reminds me of a lug wrench with 3 sizes and a 1/2" end for sockets. I can't find these any more; they sure were handy.

I have seen similar with two handles, not four. Dirt trackers used them back in the day, they didn't have money for a big fancy rig with a generator and compressor. Break it loose with the handles and then hold onto the hand grip which spins and you can spin the lugs off pretty fast. Still in use today, Speedway motors sells them.

I think that powered lugwrenches were against the rules in NASCAR at one time...1960's. Anyone else know?

I have one of them. It is nice for spinning nuts on and off since it is balanced. There is a bearing in the handle so it spins really smooth.

So what advantage would it have over a big 4-way lug wrench for changing tires? :dunno:

In theory the handle with the bearing would be faster, and 4 handles would be more balanced?

It practice, (having changed I don't know how many tires on race cars with extended 4 lug cross wrenches), the bearing in the handle makes it so you can't stop it quick between lug nuts (The support hand is used to brake the spinning lug wrench, while the off hand grabs a spoke...), the the 4 arms provide double the opportunity to whack the hand that is grabbing for a spoke, thus throwing you out of timing...

I wouldn't want one for that application... :eyecrazy:

What really matters when doing a fast wheel change manually is making sure the threads on everything are clean, and spinning freely. then you can break it lose, give the lug wrench a quick spin and its off.

Lastly, if you have an overly long lug stud, put it on a lathe and trim off any unneeded threads leaving a starter shoulder to start the lug nut faster, but minimize the time it takes to spin it on...
