Sorry guys, having a brain fart here. I am going to be wiring up a 230 volt single phase motor. Supplier says it needs 30 amps. So, I'm using number 8 wire (I know 10 would be ok but I've got the 8 fyi). This motor will have going into the magnetic starter a red, black, ground wire right? I'm thinking that running 2 conductor #8 with ground is all I need right? I don't need (I think) a red, black, white ground jacketed wire.

Luckily I'm not doing the wiring tonight!!

the ground wire would either be plain copper or with a green jacket white is a neutral color not a ground color if all you have is red and black thats fine wrap the last 6 inches or so of each end of one of the extra reds or blacks with green tape .

With NM wire you will have a black, white, and a bare ground wire.

The white wire would have to be wrapped with red tape or if all else fails black tape. Power conductors must not be white, green, green with yellow stripe, or bare wire.

The Black and White/(Red or Black tape) wires are your hot conductors. The bare wire is connected to the enclosure and motor frame.
