Suns 600 quick service tester

I've had this subs 600 quick service tester. It's from the fifties I believe. I've asked a few so called pros online to know avail. Id like to sell it but with so little info to go in idk where to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. As far as I know it works fine. Has all the attachments and turns on. Just never had it hooked up to a cae

Hi bushaaa, and welcome to Garage Journal. Interesting unit. I have a Sun 600 distributor tester dated 1962. I've never seen a model 600 like yours. I don't see your unit in the Sun catalogs I have from 1952 and 1961. The 600 distributor tester is in the 1961 catalog, I'd be pretty comfortable that your estimate of late 1950's is likely accurate. If you want to nail the date down, pull the back panel off the machine - they often wrote inspection dates on the insides of the machines when they were made.

As for the price, the lack of photos of the cables in your Ebay listing might discourage bidding a bit. The condition of the wires themselves would concern me less than the condition of the special connectors that attach to the machine. And there should be a condenser unit that is used to pull moisture from the exhaust before it is sucked into the analyzer. I'm just glad you aren't nearby - that is a unique little unit that would look good in my collection....

I was a rep for Sun Electric years ago which probably fueled my passion for automotive service and test equipment. Now if I see an old Sun machine, I have to have it. Not only are they some great garage art, they actually are quite useful for diagnosing engine and electrical automotive problems...

They are actually in good shape as well. It was a well maintained machine for sure. I actually emailed someone who sells suns and parts for them. And he said he'd never seen one either. And referred to someone else to message who also had never seen one. Believe they owned a auction house or something. My girlfriend looked it up and said she found one in a catalog. But then couldn't find the page again. Baffles me on how can't seem to find anything anywhere on this unit

If I was listing this, I'd add:
1. The part number on each gauge and what It does/ is. Also, close up pictures of the part number. All the pictures look the same from first glance.

That appears to be the same 1961 catalog I have. But, on the bottom of the back cover mine says "628-493-2" and mine is "628-493-1". The one online is apparently one issue later and has your 600.

The other interesting thing (to me anyway) is that with version 2 of the 1961 catalog, your model 600 tester was introduced, and the model 600 distributor machine was replaced with the "new" model 500 distributor machine. And I thought my model 600 distributor machine was made in 1962. Hmmm....

So does that mean mine was only made for a little time. Being why it wouldn't have appeared in your slightly newer catalog. Or am I reading that backwards. That's interesting about yours as well. Crazy how we can be sure of somethin just to find out otherwise. I hope that I fo helps you out in way or the other. I really am an amateur when comes to these but they are very interesting

It looks like my model 600 distributor machine was discontinued, and your model 600 was introduced. How long it stayed in production is unknown. Both catalogs say that prices are effective July 1, 1961, but they have different issue numbers on the back cover. Anyway, thanks for sharing and good luck with the sale!
