Surge Protectors....

While on the topic of surge protectors in the recent thread, anyone care to explain what happened here. Last night, I was plugging something into a APC surge strip. Tight spot, so it was no a easy straight insertion - or so I thought. Anyhow, while plugging the plug in, it made a slight spark, tripped the surge and well as tripped the breaker !

Surge is shot. I don't think internally the H+N were touched but I suppose it did.


Anyhow....fwiw, I ordered another APC to replace.
Recent posts boasts about the Isobars.
The difference with APC is when the MOV is shot, there is no power on the unit.

Regardless of the metal construction of the Isobars, when the MOV is shot, the surge strip still runs in Bypass with the *led* telling you whether you are protected or not.

I've tripped a breaker on a power switch when plugging something in that was turned on. Happened twice with a shop vac.
Somehow I hit the switch when uncoiling the cord and it fired up for a split second and popped the small breaker on the strip. If I plugged it in and then turned it on everything was fine.

If yours tripped a breaker in the house panel then it would seem there was a dead short. Open up the fried strip and look inside. Might have been a defective unit and just shorted when you plugged your item in.

Go figure. So I get the new one in....move everything out, put new one, tidy up the cables etc.

Bear in mind, prior to ordering, I was hitting the breaker reset on the *bad surge*, turning it on, off, unplug it etc. No juice. The on button would not engage BUT if I held it down, there would be power.

After I removed it, I decided to give it 1 last test before it goes in the trash. Go figure. She works, she's fine....
