Anyone else wish they could afford OR lights for their home garage?

These things are awesome!! Total range of motion, adjustable focus and adjustable color temperature.

I've installed them. Incredibly bright considering the low voltage lamp they use. Also got to install a $50,000 camera in one. Incredibly nerve-wracking if you've never done it before.

The closest I have gotten to surgical lighting is the card access on the doors to get in those rooms. During construction you can talk to the installers of the equipment, MRI's , etc and hear some pretty cool stuff, or how they screwed something up at some point. I work at a local area hospital which seems to rip out and redo a floor or two a year. The amount of money they must spend is staggering.

SO anyway...I'd love to have one over the bench but it would probably cost as much as the garage did. Are those units in the picture LED based by chance?

I was at Skytop Rover in Philadelphia looking for the next project that I don't have time for and noticed that he had some old ones. He helped clean out an old psych hospital and scored them along with a foot operated sink. They are out there if you keep looking. I'm trying to get my hands on a dental light for my work bench.

I use those every day at work, in a large E.R. Most of our rooms have the smaller lights (procedure lights) in them (more than enough for the garage). Our trauma rooms have the full-bore surgical lights like those pictured above.

For my home garage, I went with even smaller...dental lights. Pelton & Crane. They are model 'LF,' which stands for 'Light Fantastic.' They are designed to brightly light an area around 4" x 8", approximately 30" from the light, which is perfect for the workbench. I have two of them...

Use to work for American Sterilizer ( Amsco ). Got some exam lights for the garage but got rid of the the surgical lights. They were 120 vac fixtures but the bulbs are special. Had a debate with a bean counter at a local hospital over the replacement bulbs. He said the proper ones were to expensive and send someone to Ace to pick up bulbs. Explained that wouldn't work and why but he insisted. Had him sign the order refusing to purchase them. Later the order did get through. Still got a bunch of the variacsfor the 120 v jobs that go to from 80 - 180 vac. Also got some of the low voltage jobs to 35 vac @ 15 amps. Come in handy for bench supplies.

I have a real nice 24" OR light in my shop. Hangs from the ceiling on a sliding track arrangement and it is an awesome work light. Picked it up on ebay for $60. Stole it. It is optically designed to be a "shadow free" light and it nearly is. Bright, white, glare free light. Outstanding as a work light as you might imagine it would be given its intended purpose. On the down side, as mentioned above, the bulbs are expensive, special, and don't last as long as I would like. The special part is the optical alignment of the filament with the reflector and the mirrored glass on the bulb. I'm working on a solution. I also have a couple of dental lights. They also use special bulbs and are OK to work with. Since they are designed to illuminate your mouth, that's about how much area they light up. A bit limiting, but they look cool. There should be a lot of Incandescent lamps showing up since they are all getting replaced with LED lights which makes a lot of sense from several perspectives.

I am considering replacing the lamps in my P&C dental lights with LED units. The original lamps in there run on 23-25 volts (varying brightnesses) and there is a transformer already built into the arm of the lamp. I've seen some LED units which would be a good fit as far as size and configuration.

I have been sniffing around using LED's as well. Problem is that the bulb I have to replace is 150 Watts and it take a bunch of LED's to generate the same number of lumens (2100 as I recall). If you look at the Very expensive LED replacements for incandescents you can see that they are arrays of LEDs in the form, more or less, of a bulb. LEDs are getting better and cheaper fast, so I'll continue to monitor the situation.

Nah, I'd have this irresistible urge to plunge a scalpel into someone every time I was in the garage.

Nice and bright is awesome though.
