Well, clearly this was the major problem and I needed to fix that or scrub the whole idea.

The idea was to make up a repair piece all in one. Incorporate some studs/bolts and fillet for brazing.

It does look a bit like someone has tried to weld it but that's just where some sharp edges have been filed off. The shiny bits are soft cast iron, tested with a file.

Hit the lot with a wire wheel.

So I am even more determined to repair it, the relative newness means I should expect very low backlash with a nice new thread. Like I say, the rotating part is nice and tight too. I'm going to go with plan A, fabricate a repair piece and braze it on.

I will file off the rough surface and burn out any oils (or v.v.) drill and tap it for some bolts. So really I need to finalise on using oxyacetylene or my lovely TIG. Also there is conflicting or at least opposing views on pre-heat. Some say pre heat to 500C then braze, the other option appears to be try to keep it cool which largely points to TIG. Dunno yet.

Pulled the screw out for a look see and to straighten the handle.

Thread looks really good except for the very end which has picked up at some stage.

I just hand filed it with a small needle file until it looked good. bar got straightened in the press. I wish I'd taken the handle apart because having that great big screw hanging off it was a real chore.

I was expecting to find a perfectly flat machined surface for the jaws. This was a big surprise.

That's a good 0.2mm step so the perfectly flat machined and ground jaws aren't flush.

I wonder if this was a production problem, doesn't look right to me, I might even ask Swindens about it. The snapped end had the stale the other way around with the screw holes slightly below the lower mounting surface. The upper surface on that jaw snapped off.

Found some 12mm hot rolled (?) steel sheet.

Easiest way to cut was with a cutting disk and I moved it to the door to keep the dust out of the workshop as much as possible. Incidentally, that "vice on a plate" is possibly the best thing I even made in terms of how handy it is. Usually lives on the welding bench.

I ground the top of the vice jaw flat but there is a slope on the rear buttress which I will need to account for in the final repair piece.

Nearly there. Just need to match the piece to the remaining surfaces.

Question time:

I'll drill it out as accurately as possible to accept some bolts, probably allen headed but they are going to have to be relatively small diameter, M4-M6 at the most.

Sorry for the quick fire copy/paste, I only finished this project yesterday but I know it's fun to follow progress and I know there's some clever guys on here that would really have helped!

Set up the vice on a flat plate to square everything up. Have to say I was surprised and somewhat dismayed to discover the top and bottom jaw mountings are nowhere near parallel! I would expect the setup as shown to give me two perfectly parallel bars. It's easily one or two degrees off, enough to spot by eye. (I did have the parallels against the machined edges when I measured it)

This is what I am aiming for. It's got plenty of meat on it, most of the tangs will get ground off though it occurs to me I could leave a bit more on rather than go for symmetry.

It's really nice to be working with chunky stock rather than thin panels. I whacked the amps up to 120 and got that sucker welded alright!

Trimmed off the edges with a disk cutter and tidied up on Bertie the Linisher.

Getting it clamped up in a jig was a bit of a chore but got there eventually. An extra arm or two would have helped.

Then counterbore for clearance and to countersink the cap heads. The angled hole was a right pig because the drill just wanted to wander off the slope. Just did is slowly and surely with everything clamped solid.

Had to fettle the cap head bolts a bit for depth and put a radius on the angled head to match the angle at the bottom of the hole. I don't have any bottoming bits, or bottoming taps come to think of it.

I'm relatively happy with the result. Now just have to decide whether or not to chamfer the edges now or bolt it up and grind out a groove prior to brazing.

So to the most dangerous aspect of this thread and perhaps the most risky venture in my shed. Brazing!

I got an old oxyacetylene kit knocked up out of some free bottles and some secondhand bits gathered from eBay. It has issues! Anyhow, the flame comes on and without any better info to hand I loaded a number 3 nozzle, set the gas to 4lpm (?) for each cylinder and away we go.

First I tidied up the face of the vice with a fresh grind.

Then put a chamfer on the repair piece so the braze has somewhere to go. Looks dirty but thats because it is shiny clean!

Sorry, once I got going I just got on with the job. No pics from the braze. I sat there for 10-15 minutes heating the casting gently, then got on with it. Lots of flux then allow the braze to flow when the area gets hot enough. The casting is sitting on a large firebrick and that is a real welding blanket!

It definitely got hot enough because I did overdo it a couple of times, melting away the repair piece edges and burning the casting.

As you can see I filled in the allen key holes (it is NOT coming off again!) and after brazing the main body at the back, ran an extra bead around all the joins.

Bit of a tidy up with various grinders, dremels etc.

Naturally my main concern was to keep the new face flat, parallel and square.

Overall I am pretty happy with the result. I did have an issue when after welding, the main 12mm face actually distorted, bulging in the middle to about 0.1 - 0.2mm at the ends. I tried flame straightening but the part was too complex to get any discernible result. This is after a quick grind then a lot of cross filing and finally using emery.

Tidied up the rear so I could refit the jaw bolts and for cosmetic effect! it needs a bit more work but when painted, should look OEM and I'm assuming the braze was successful so it should also be dead strong.

At least the new face seems to line up perfectly with my parallels. A bit of play in the vice will take care of any slight misalignment. Swindens assure me it would not have left the factory with a 0.2mm step, I have to assume therefore that this vice had been modified in service.

Imagine my surprise when it was a mile out! The jaw only fits one way up or it hangs over the edge. WTF? So I double checked the OEM jaw:

OMG! I can hardly believe it. Thats almost a whole millimetre out in just 14mm. What on earth is going on. I'd expect an expensive hardened steel jaw to test the accuracy of my measurements. This throws some of the other stuff into harsh light. The machined step in the jaw faces, the fact that the opposing jaws are nowhere near 180 degrees apart, the anvil not being parallel to the base etc. etc. I had wanted to defend this amazing vice as being the best of British but this particular one is surprisingly crude.

I started to linish the anvil flat but I didn't want to take too much material off. It was about 1-2mm off being parallel with the base so I did most of it and just left it at a slight angle to parallel. I may revisit that.

Still, it's a tool and I can't wait to try it. I'll probably make some HDPE jaws up out of an old chopping board or maybe mahogany. I can't see myself throwing any more money at this though, will be interesting to see how much the new jaws cost.

But hey, it's starting to look nice!

Now I just need to decide if I want to risk another braze to fill up the cracked off back cap retaining screw. I say risk because I don't want to heat up the whole thing just for that small braze right on the end. On the other hand, I do know it's possible to distort and crack castings if you're not careful, plus I'd have to machine off any excess. Maybe I could TIG it using those brass rods??

Incredibly, TIG brazing seemed to work! I certainly wouldn't be so casual with anything life threatening but I thought I'd have a go.

From stone cold, 60 amps, AC, with +ve bias and -ve, seemed to go on ok but spatter.

Went to DC which was virtually the same though I think I cranked the amps up a bit. Again lots of noise, spatter and the silicon rod really would boil off in an instant. But it stuck fast! I even managed to braze it with a bolt in situ so I didn't have to muck about trying to find a hole etc. Was a right pig to get it out but it did screw out eventually.

Tidied up with a hand file. Where the TIG hit the cast iron, it went glass hard. Had to dremel a couple of spots off with a stone when I flattened it back. Drilled and tapped the back cap and all went together ok. The grub screws are only there to prevent the front jaw from being pushed into the vice, which is how the postie managed to break it when he dropped it.

Well I can never really wait for paint to dry, it's a sort of thing with me. Everything I paint has my fingerprints on it somewhere. So I put the thing together while it was still tacky!

Bolted it down finally and set square. Note: I had to cut four inches of overhang off the worktop (quarter inch steel plate).

Took half a dozen disks to cut that edge off and made a right mess. Where I'd been trying the oxy, I had a diamond hard scale. The plasma slot drove the disk into the supports. Finally cut it off and of course covered the whole area with a thick coating of grit.

So it was with no little relief I finally got to play with the new vice. And of course the first thing I wanted to do was give my brazing skilz a decent test. Clamped down solidly on a scaff pole.

Then with six foot of scaff pole hanging off one end, see how strong it is. The verdict is; super strong!

The newly repaired jaw didn't snap, the HDPE jaws work really well and the rotating clamp is as solid as a rock. Result! I might even keep a sensible size bar handy for use as an arm rest or prop for welding.

The easiest way to get those spot bollock would be to get that vice onto the pillar drill now you have the inserts fitted, with the jaws at 90 degrees to the quill. Either a piece of dowel with some abrasive paper stuck to it else one of those sanding drums like you find on a bobbin sander chucked up in the drill and then work the quill up and down to shape the surface. The curve will be spot on then in relation to the jaws.

That's a good idea though I have plenty of spare material to make some new jaws. I've been toying with flycutting them on a lathe. Was disappointed to discover the ideal machine, my linisher, has one wheel too big and one too small, otherwise I could have done it on that.

Very nice job Screwedriver in showing how much work it takes to repair a vise with that much damage. You did a superb job showing great pic's and adding your own words in all your steps. We can see how many hours it takes to do a repair of the proportion and how many different set ups it takes, and all the hand work you did. I can relate. Great job, I really enjoyed your post.

Not much to it really, nice to see the machined surfaces are all still good. I did spot a crows foot stamped into the body, so another ex MoD item.

And there it is, all petrol washed. I just need to remove a couple of stuck jaw bolts where the thread has been peened over the nut.

Then I just need to decide what to do with it. I might just wire brush it and wax it. Bare cast iron really does look lovely. I am planning to sell it so offers invited. Think BIG.

Screwed: that is a gem. also like the shipping container the seller made to ship it to you. that isn't normal shipping practices here, but looks like it protected the Swinden nicely. was that handle made out of electrical wire or do tell how it was tied under the plywood or a picture if you still own the box?

I did thank him profusely for doing such a good job with the box. But it wasn't bolted down at all. Luckily he had padded the jaws as I asked, otherwise if it gets a ding on the handle end, it can break the rear casting. Awesome strength in one direction, b*gger all in the other.

Handle was a bit of poly rope and I am keeping the box for when I sell it on!

The only thing I need to do is shim out the handle because there is a mm of slop. I suspect it should have a washer in there anyway. The thread looks and feels really good, there is some backlash but considering its almost 70 years old, i can't grumble. Gonna have a look for an exploded diagram and see. it's gonna get one anyway....

Screwed: Awesome job again and pretty damn fast too. funny how old gunk almost turns into a part of the cast iron with time. i know the casting is rough on those Swindens, but i still like it naked and a few coats of BLO and you might find a buyer like me that prefers that instead of something painted.

Screwed: boiled linseed oil is BLO. sorry for not saying the first time. what do you have on it now to keep it from rusting? Fretters just did a vise with shoe polish and we'll have to see how that holds up. you can use a paste wax too if you like, but you have to apply it every couple months to keep the rust at bay.

Nice work on the second one, I would be interested in buying it, they go for too much on ebay for me to risk ending up with a bad one and they never turn up locally. Now I have said that one will.
