Tank less unit

This isn't for garage, rather the whole house. Thinking of ditching our old 40 gallon electric water heater and going with a tank less unit. Are the electric tank less units any good? Looking for pro's and con's of going this route. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Biggest con that steered me away was power supply. Even though I have a 200 amp service and plenty of power, the electric whole house units generally need three 40amp, 220v breakers and the necessary heavy wiring. I don't have that much real estate in my panel and would have to install a sub panel and move a bunch of stuff around. I do have friends that have them and they are completely happy.

They do pull serious amps but work damn good.
If you had the ability for a gas tank less, best of both worlds.
Had a tankless for 5 years and will never ever go back to a tank.

Have a propane unit on one house. 100# bottle lasts about 5 months with two kids and us.

We did a 80 gallon hybrid heat pump Rheem.

I leave it in heat pump only mode. Saves us $30-50 per month over the prior resistance heat unit.

I bailed on the on-demand electric units due to the power requirements.

What is really nice is that it works just fine on the generator as long as I keep it in heat pump mode.

The dehumidification of the basement is also nice.

You will need access to a drain or will have to pump the condensate.

If you aren’t going to do a gas tankless, get a heat pump water heater. You’ll save energy and dehumidify the basement or garage as well.

Tankless going to need the coldest incoming water temp and max gpm hot water to size the heater. Incoming water temp minus 120° for temp rise.
199'000 btu = 243 amps need a 32 and 28 kw heaters
60° rise = 8 gpm

If you have such a source, gas-fueled tankless units are the way to go.

But you really ought to check out Rheem's hybrid electric water heaters.
They are more energy efficient than the current high current thus power use electric water heaters.
And you get dehumidification as a byproduct of having hot water.
