Tap Extensions? For threading

Does anyone know where I can find an extension for hand tapping new threads?

I need to install new threads in a motorcycle cylinder head, but the location of the hole is a few inches below the head.

I need an extension that will go onto the tap and still be able to use the hand wrench.

or anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Long tap handles and tap extensions are available from any machine shop supply such as MSC, etc. So long as you don't have to reach deep into a counterbore, these will work.

If you need to reach into a deep counterbore, I would recommend an extension tap or pulley tap. An extension tap is basically a standard tap with a much longer shank. Usually 6" in the smaller sizes. Regal cutting tools is one supplier of these in metric sizes, standard sizes can be ordered from MSC.

I really appreciate the replies! Thanks!

I can't put a socket on it because the void going down to the spark plug hole is pretty narrow.

Plus I need the "square" type of extension and I can't find a socket to fit the square end.

If you can't put a socket on it, you likely won't get a tap extension or extended tap handle to fit either. Depending on the clearances, you might be able to "customize" something. 8-point sockets are readily available at decently stocked Sears stores.

Since it is a spark plug thread, you might look to see if the automotive tool companies have a solution for you. I suspect the price of an extension tap from Regal will shock you, unless it happens to be a stock size. :)

A tap socket would probably work.

When faced with this problem, the first thing I look at are 1/4" and 3/8" socket extensions (reversed). If the slop is a problem (with the tap dropping out), I have used two solutions.........drill and tap for a "set screw" in the female side, or use a bit of silicone, if you have a day or so for it to set up. Cleanup is quick and easy with silicone.

I use either square or eight point sockets to hold my taps when I need to use them in an obstructed area. Do purpose built tap sockets have a clip or something to hold the tap in place? If they do I think I just found my next tool investment!

They have an o-ring. Of course 8-points work too, but only for a few sizes.
