Looks like its just an extended shank tap. Any machine that holds it in a chuck or collet could use it, mill, HBM, VMC or even in a lathe or turning center. It all depends on part geometry. You could use it anywhere you need to tap a hole next to a tall feature, or down in a cavity or something like that.

I wouldn't grind it, they are pretty expensive. I'd keep it or sell it.

Too brittle and dangerous to use for a punch. You'll put your eye out.

yep HSS is pretty brittle, but i doubt it will shatter if impact force is applied at the 90 deegre on the shank,BUT i may be wrong :lol_hitti

That's a "nut tap". No joke.

The shank is smaller than the minor diameter of the thread so you can tap really deep. However, it's not a spiral point of spiral flute so it's only good for cast iron or brass.

I would also call that a "nut tap" based on the long reduced diameter shank. I've never seen the extreme length of taper before, so I'd call it a "special".

Does the tip look like it would "drill" without a pilot hole? It could be designed to drill and tap, through holes only, all in one. I'm imagining a "field use" in a hand held drill motor/chuck rather than in a machine tool. That application would tend to explain the extreme taper and square-less shank. The tooth geometry, which I can't evaluate in the picture, defines the optimum material it's intended for.

It would be a quick and simple task, for anyone with a surface grinder and a square collet block, to grind a square on the tail of the shank. a square would make it more friendly to use in a conventional tap wrench but gripping the round shank in a drill chuck is also possible.
