[Kaizen]

Two and a half years ago I started my planning for my garage (30x36x12). I had basic experience but the biggest thing I’d done was a shed. Now today I’m about 80 percent done with my one man garage build and happy as a pig in chit. Yes I’ve done everything solo except concrete. No rented machines. No helpers. Except for all of you guys. From the build to the epoxy to the trusses to the metal roof all of your expertise has kept me on the right path. I deeply appreciate all of your time, advice, wise *** comments, and im/phone calls. I’m not going to call you out individually as you will be inundated forever. Without GJ I would still be scratching my head and dreaming. Thanks to all.

Ha that’s the concrete guy. Nothing as intimidating as watching a full concrete truck empty in then minutes. Glad I had them. I was at the bank getting their money lol

How much you reckon you saved by doing it yourself? Any idea what your cost per sqft ended up being?

I haven’t totaled it up yet. For my area 20-35k saved is my guess. A fair trade for all my time imo

Ayuh. Freezing my **** off I cursed. Sliding off the roof from the sweat in summer I swore. No sane person would do this without all of you to convince them. Now that I’ve drunk the cool aid I shall pass on the gift

Great job! as a person who also built my own building with exception of finishing the concrete floor, it is rewarding. And time consuming But the flip side is I've never complained about a contractor failing to show up for work, or any delay, or any aspect of the quality of materials or construction.

As my Dad says, Good Fast and Cheap, You Pick 2....it never fails.

Good job, wish I would of had GJ 23yrs ago when I built my first garage at 25yrs old. It was a learning experience for sure. Don't think I would be brave enough to tackle one now.

I quoted 20-30k above and think that’s fair. Probably more for the finish work I’m doing. Once I finish and tally the numbers I will have a better idea

Honestly when I got to the peak of the sheathed roof the first time and looked around I realized most of my neighbors houses could fit inside this thing and realized I had to fit it in better and not just vinyl it. Going for a Victorian carriage house feel. A step up from a New England barn but a lot more details.
I think I got the trusses the right side up [emoji13]. I did have to spin half of them around. Wouldn’t have been an issue if I had marked them all and installed the same. I seriously eyeballed it for some reason. Was off by an inch at most. Trim hides my framing mistakes

I’ve never had a real garage my entire life. Now I’m getting to that ripe old age where fixing cars on my back in the snow is not doable. So before I get so old I got the drive. Just like eating an elephant.....one bite at a time. Can’t tell you have satisfied it feels to work on a project under the roof that I built. Plus a hell of a lot easier then the old way.

Hope you do. Even with my almost half an acre this was the biggest I could do and only place I could squeeze it without asking for a variance. After setbacks/right of way footages this was all I could manage. It’s amazing what was allowed fifty years ago compared to now. I really wanted to move it more towards the street as it’s no parking anyway but the permit process could have been another 3 to 6 months. Ironically with where it’s placed the man door is directly in front of my house door so a nice deck and gazebo would make it a nice sitting area in the shadow of this garage.
