Another project. Years ago I made my own countertops for my garage workbench. I used hard maple as I had some of it left over from when I built the Roubo workbench in my basement. Wood isn’t going to stand up to hard use but I really like it. It just feels warmer to me. After Few years of use the countertops were pretty dirty. Some patina is good, but this was too much. I decided that since I needed to disassemble my workbench anyway I was going to sand and refinish each of the two sides of my workbench. Ir still has some patina, but the look is better now.IMG_0773.jpeg

In addition to cleaning the floor and refinishing my worktop I need to do some spring cleaning to my workbench drawers. A couple of years ago I purchase a nearly complete set of Sonic mechanics tools in Sonic foam inlays. I have a number of drawer from them that look like this.

I think I have ten drawers like this. The organization is excellent. Really really nice, not that I had anything to do with it other than charging my credit card. Doing this was a big expense but I could justify it as any mechanics tools I owned previously was all cheap stuff, sets with missing pieces, and stuff I didn’t mind giving away.

That said there was some stuff that I kept or stuff that it would not make to buy from Sonic. All that was also in my workbench too. But this stuff was completely unorganized. I want to clean up these drawers.

I’m using ToolGrid to do that. I’ve got three drawers done. See below. IMG_0230.jpegAnd my junk drawer Too.IMG_0227.jpeg

Here they are in the theater, one fully assembled.
Four 18 inch subwoofers is way too much for my little room but it sure is fun. As soon as we got the screen hung back up and all the equipment hooked up My son and I watched the New Top gun movie with the volume way too loud. Both of us sat there and cackled as we shook the world around us. Fun.

And here in the home behind the screen

I have a 12" and a 10" and that is a lot in my room. FOUR 18s would be PERFECT!

I mentioned a couple of posts (and almost one month) ago that I was wanting to do some reorganization of the garage. The biggest part of that is building a new storage cabinet for holding my car detailing chemicals and tools. As I’ve gotten more into car detailing the amount of this stuff has increased pretty dramatically over the last couple of years. I needed more storage and better organization.
I looked purchasing a metal cabinet but my desire to have something very shallow and with bypass doors led me to build something on my own in the same laminating plywood construction that I’ve used elsewhere in the garage. Below is a nearly completed cabinet.
With doors closed. IMG_0277.jpeg
And with one door open. IMG_0275.jpegI still be some more work to do. Finishing the laminate on the lower two drawer fronts, adding door pulls, adding a drawer front to the small drawer in the middle of the cabinet and finishing out the left side of the cabinet. I hope to finish that this weekend.
