My Builder, Lynn, was a local guy and his son (Rob iirc). He was recommended by my building supply company. He was small time, one job at a time, minimum equipment, (as you'll see) and willing to meet my needs. I was still working, my late wife (Sandy) took a lot of the pics, she also gave me updates during the day..

***** Edit addition***** The excavation was to back the west end of the barn into the bank of the county drain that's my west property line. Skillful measurements based on property description and Drain Commission stated drain width were very important in best usage of my 1 acre ranch. This became an issue not long after.....

Enter the rest of his heavy equipment - a retired Consumer's Energy boom truck with hydraulic powered auger and a detachable boom. It was not licensed, leaked hydraulic fluid by the buckets and must have run him at least 300 bucks. Lynn got his money's worth out of everything (he worked his son pretty hard too).

I just dug out the receipts from the building supply.. This was a "package" 30'x40'x14' with a 16'x40' lean-to on the north side, blended into the roofline of the main structure (See second post for view of roofline). This gave me an internal set of posts which I planned on using as support for "attic" storage of the 16'x40'. Material costs not including concrete floor were about $13,000. Labor, including the concrete floor were about $12,000. I shudder to think what it'd cost now for an equivalent 1840 sq. ft. barn..

This shows the back side, the depth was roughly 24" into the bank. Treated T&G lumber, tarred with styrofoam over that on the exterior (my idea, probably dumb). Only water issues I've ever had were from plugged eaves-trough. In the upper left you can see the "friendship bridge" between out=r place and the long suffering next door neighbors (good people, long story for another day).

Another comment, you may note the apparent alignment of the shed with nothing. Actually it was aligned with a 12' x 60' mobile home that was my parents temporary home while getting ready to move to God's Country near Rodgers City, MI. Unfortunately that move never took place due to Mom's passing. Dad lived there another 13 years, then re-married and left the land and MH to my wife and I. The funny thing is the garage is not aligned with the road (it was supposed to be when Dad had it built) and neither is my house. Makes for interesting satellite pics.

Mr. Frog supervised, one of many from the county drain, checking daily on the anti-erosion fencing..

This was the day that an employee from the Drain Commission stopped by. I was there and could tell something was up. Next arrival was from our township who was immediately in deep conversation with the Drain guy. I finally interrupted and asked what was up. The DC guy said we were over on the right of way for the drain and he was going to get construction stopped. I showed him the plans, the signoff from the DC and asked what he was basing his claim on. He said that the drain was a major and had a 60' right of way. I politely told him I had gone to great pains to verify the right of way as being 40' with his office. I further pointed out that my house was exactly 20' from the center of the drain and had been there since 1979.. His complaint was they couldn't access the drain from my side of it. Note that the other side is clear, flat and where work had always been done from. At this point Lynn joined with a single comment/question - "Who's paying to move the holes?" . The township guy left, the DC guy (who actually lived about 2 miles away) retreated to his truck for a phone call, then came back and said "Just build it"...

Framing done, first trusses being placed, pretty good workk for a crew of two! I built the shed in '79 with help from the next door neighbor (we used his Allis Chalmers CA with a 12' 4x4 lashed to the front end loader to place the site built (by yours truly) trusses. It wasn't in too bad a shape for 27 years old , but it's days were numbered.

View from the basement door.
The truck is setting in the 30'x40' 14' high main part of the barn. Probably polluting the drainage ditch from 40' away. The last photo is a detail of the buried part of the back/side wall. Predictions of early failure by some still have not been fulfilled.
