The Rolls Royce Snap-on Wrench

I bought a bunch of Proto tools a while back, and included was one Snap-on. It's very unusual, I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

I think it has to be one of the most unique snap-on tools there is.

As a followup, it is a specialty tool for helicopter repair. Listed as:

ADAPTER, TORQUE TURBINE ATTACH UPPER NUT

List price is $224!

It's interesting, but out of my interest. I'd trade for a nice piece of something Proto or Snap-on if anyone has an interest in this unique piece!

Looks homemade with the welds. That part number is for a 3/8-7/16 offset combo wrench.

If it says 3/8 on the 12pt wrench end, that's the bold size it's tightening. It shouldn't say 5/16 on the other end if it was a single tool.

I call 5/16 socket welded to a 3/8 wrench. Very cool peice, but definitely home brew.

It's not a home made, but it is a constructed part, from standard snap-on components. Here's a link to where you can buy one new:

Interesting to me that this came to me as a single tool. It's part of a set, and aircraft mechanics are usually very much interested in making sure all parts are back in the set when they get done with the job....

It came to me with a bunch of Proto 500 full polish wrenches and three of the new, streamlined aviation ratchets.

It is possible that Rolls-Royce decided to was such a small quantity of those wrenches they had a few dozen made by an independent company instead of making the dies to forge the tool in one piece.

When I saw the RR part I started wondering if that was RR cars or Engines. You quickly answered my question. Given it's for a helicopter it's likely for the Allison 250 series engine. Allison engines would have been SAE hardware. I don't think RR even had a native helicopter engine. When they acquired RR in the 90s they got both the 250 series engines as well as a new 800 series design that was jointly designed with Allied Signal. I'm not sure that the 800 is in common use but the 250 and related engines are VERY common, perhaps the most common helicopter engine in the world.

It certainly looks like a "fabricated" specialty tool. Not surprising in aerospace.

I posted then saw this link... yes, the 407 is an Allison 250 based motor.

Unless Snap On made it, it is homemade, even if it was welded together by a company. That is a purpose built tool, lots of people make custom stuff like that. Still interesting and I am sure someone would want it, but don't think that just because two different Snap On tools are used to make it that it is a Snap On tool.

I've used that same style wrench, the only bad thing about that one, someone at some time in the first picture has ground the box end making it thinner, and weaker, losing some of the hardness and rounding off the 12point

forgot to add these normally came to us as manufacture tool kits from bell helicopter or allison not snap on, they would have contracted someone to build these for them
