Fo hundo each?!?! One with and (I quote) "typical small crack".

I anticipate no one ever buys it. Craigslist caters to the type of people who won't overpay for anything.

They'll sell......People pay $400.00 for for a run of the mill, plain Jane Wilton bullet every day..... These vises, although not perfect, are rare.......

The used vise scene is pretty good in Rhody .
I think 300 for the Columbian would be better. Only because it has 8" jaws. The cracked Prentiss is only worth anything if you can weld or know some one who does.

With the ammount of vise collectors and hoarders, they will probably sell.

I never get smart out of a few CL posters in my area; either they think they are sitting on a gold mine and when you (try) key word to help them out they tell you to buzz off (see first example): way overpriced example-

I'm not saying those vises aren't somewhat rare due to size. But the Columbian is not worth $400. The Prentiss would be if it was in good shape. Look at the handle, kind of looks like a wet noodle. Mangled handle often leads to broken nut, which is almost impossible to replace. Unlikely someone will want both at the same time. And the guy comes off as a d!ck, so...just observations.

That being said, it is pretty rare to see two very large vises come up around here.

Happy Friday!

If those vises were listed in the Dallas Craigslist they would sell quickly. There is no pipeline for vises in the area, so usually the only way big old vises like that show up is when someone from the east coast retires in the area and either dies or sells off his tool collection. $800? That is less than one Sig handgun. Lots of money in Texas. Good judgement? Maybe less common.

And I thought I was the ONLY one on GJ thinking $2/lb is nuts for vises, many folks here pay that regularly btw. I top out at $0.50/lb for rare vises.

Regarding those ads specifically, craigs is like ebay in that it attracts all the loonies willing to pay too much. OTOH, theyre in RI and New England was home to most of the big ol vise manufacturers.

I agree......Some of the highest vise prices in the country are in your back yard.....I used to look at what was for sale in your area.....I don't bother anymore as I can't afford it.....

If you guys think craigslist is bad, take a gander at armslist. People want full price retail and then some because they added some ****** after market accessories.

Last night I saw someone trying to sell a Chinese SKS with a tapco stock with a scope mount for $700. The parts together cost less than what the knuckle head is asking, plus who the hell is going to buy a $700 sks when you can get a AR-15 for literally the same price. Another one that was silly was some guy asking $299 for a H&R singe shot shot gun, not even a nice one.

Guns for the past half-century have seldom been a rational purchase.

Vises were a rational purchase, but then we here at GJ got into vise envy and vise collecting and now the users are competing with the posers and the collectors who already have twenty.

I've got a car friend here who paid $650 for a big Columbian and paid another $125 to have it sandblasted and painted. It sits in the middle of a sparkling clean garage and he's never used it. His money, his deal, but that's just one example of why vise prices have gone crazy.

I've never understood why you'd want to exhibit such a ****** attitude on a for-sale ad on CrackList. Not to mention shading the truth about the obvious damage.

The annoying lowballers and scammers can't read and don't care about your pissed-off little rants. The only ones who are actually reading your ad are actual potential buyers, so why not be nice?

Some one who sees AR platform weapons for the overly complicated pieces of junk that they are yet is still dumb enough to get ripped off. :dunno:

LOL, it reads like my ads... tired of morons. tired of people wasting my time. tired of morons... did I mention that? So, I find that those that are offended were never going to buy my stuff anyhow. They only want to scold me on my "attitude or price" and I am sick of it. So far, I have sold everything for my asking price or fairly close. So, clearly my ads are not offending buyers.

I make my ads very clear and then I spell out some ground rules. Sortof like this last ad. It weeds out the morons and time wasters.

So true. There is a guy in CT that is always listing bulk packs of .22 for $75 or more. You'd have to be insane to pay that much when you can go to walmart or a local gun shop and buy the same thing for a bit under $30, sometimes even cheaper if there is a special deal.

I think he was one of the people who would wait outside walmart every morning and buy all the .22 when it was hard to find. Now he has a massive stash of it that he overpaid for. I guess he is hoping to find some people gullible enough to fall for his line "this is impossible to buy in any stores" so he can get some of his money back.

I was a U.S. Army Sgt in 1970-71. My M16 was proudly stamped, "Made by General Motors Hydramatic Division". At first they were very unreliable weapons, and the word going around was that more than one grunt was found shot with a jammed M-16 in his hands. Some guys carried AK's which were super reliable whether they were caked in mud or ice or never cleaned. However eventually the D.D. cleaned up its act and solved the M-16's reliability problems. They are great guns.

I fail to see the "jackass" attitude in this guys ad. He seems pretty honest and thorough to me. He's not willing to give them away to some flipper with a can of Rustoleum. I've dealt with enough of those types and some of the deceitful tactics they employ to be first in line on an item, are downright despicable.

If you don't want to buy what he's selling for the price he wants, move on.

If he's patient enough he'll get that for them... He might have to sell them individually though. Who knows.

I live in an area where people buy HF welders on sale for $89, use them for 5 years and advertise them on CL for $150. Of course when I want to sell something I can't get more than 50% of retail if it's in new condition. I usually buy new and let stuff sit in the corner when I'm done with it.

I also fail to see it and I went back to re read the add twice to make sure I was not missing something, I do not know alot obout the vises but I see a guy that is offering a couple of decent vises ( considering how old they are ) for decent prices ( considering some of the prices I see around here when they scarcely pop up ) and he is directly telling you his terms.

When I place an add on Craiglist I use a similar format but admittedly am a bit dickish on purpose within my add cause A I dont have the time to waste on bottomfeeders looking to flip my item and B I dont have time for bottom feeders looking to flip my item.

I've got no problem with folks wanting to dictate the terms of their sale up front, even if they want to be jerks about it. Granted though, it probably turns off 50% of potential buyers who DO have a problem with it.

What gets me about the above ad, is they guy making a bunch of "demands" for an item but doesn't even state whether or not the motor works. Maybe if he spent the time he did writing the ad putting a F'ing cord on the motor to see if it works would be time better spent.

$800 for the pair? It could happen but he may be reposting it for a loooong time. At least vises don't deteriorate too much and really don't take up much space, even the big ones. Best outcome for someone (not the seller) is that they don't sell, the seller croaks/divorces/goes bankrupt/etc..... and someone gets a bargain at the estate sale.

CTyankee I also thought it odd & strange that after all his write up how does a person even know if the thing works??? A person would be crazy to drop all that money without even seeing if it turns over and yet the guy is firm on his price.:wtf:

What do you want to bet he's a member here.......

I also don't get why he's selling them together. Why not split them up even at the same pricing? To me it just alienates a buyer who may just want one. If the buyer wants both well then buy both.

People still do that, and it's still hard to find simply because of that. I've NEVER seen .22lr ammo anywhere (Sporting good stores, Walmart, gun shops, etc) because it sells out so fast and ends up places like Gunbroker for $0.12 a round or more. To get it for what it's really worth (No more than $0.08 per round) you have to be patient, and buy it online from places like Academy & Cabela's when it becomes in stock.

Sorry, not on topic with the thread, but it irritates me to see people going out and buying up all of the ammo because they either A. Are conspiracy theorists who think the government buys it all/will ban it or B. Think it's okay to profit from creating a huge demand for the ammo by depleting the supply and inflating reason A, and then selling it to the desperate for 2-3x what it's worth.

Meanwhile, the average joe like myself who just built a 10/22 from blank receiver up waits around forever just to find one or two 50rd boxes for a reasonable price.

Okay I'm done.
