Maybe something older, US made, and affordable? I'd hate to buy some Asian junk online. I need one fairly quickly to do some work on one of my cars, so my Paypal is at the ready.

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure what size I need, actually. Not industrial size or anything. It's to pull a pulley from a car motor.

Will a slide hammer work?

How much room to the rad? What diameter pulley?

I have used the AutoZone rental program before. But, owning tools is fun, and saves me running to the store for future projects :)

BMW, there is not much room between the pulley and radiator. I might have to remove the rad for this job, though...need to read the manual I guess.

Bull, more importantly, what part are you trying to pull? That should dictate the kind of puller you need.

yea, my big one might not work. The screw is long. Is the pulley deep? Worst comes to worst we can help you pick one to buy.

It is the harmonic balancer, actually, from a '95 Firebird Formula, aka my cursed car.

A harmonic balancer is popcorn Bull. Why don't you get one from Sears. Yea I know, yada, yada, yada. I bet it will still be made in the states and will be just fine. I will tell ya, this is just not worth paying truck prices for. A bit cheaper one should do you just fine.

Does popcorn mean easy, Buck?

I will go the Sears route if I have to, but that means driving to the mall, and I HATE the mall! Ask my wife.

I figured that a used truck brand, SK, or even a used older Craftsman might be floating around in some member's overflow toolbox for a decent price. :bounce:

Can't you just pull the balancer off with your hand or with a light hit from a dead blow?

I don't know...this will be my first time working on an LT1 motor.

A respected member here with experience on these cars suggested I be careful not to damage the item, and to use a three jaw puller. :headscrat

GM balancers are pressed. If you can pull it off with your hand you have some serious issues other that just the balancer.

Bull,Why do you need to remove it?

Replaceing crank seal,Timing chain???

It should have 3 threaded holes on the balancer. You should just be able to use a three hole puller with the bolts and pull it out.

Put the crank bolt in without the washer and use that to put the puller screw against so you dont ****** up the crank snout threads.

I do have a three hole puller that I bought for pulling steering wheels....

I am pulling this against my will, because the car is cursed. Has been off the road since Christmas Eve '07, when the trans died. Finally put in a used trans (dice roll, I know, but I'm cash short) and a new cat-back and got the car all buttoned up. I could see the end of my having to take the bus to work, when my wife walks into the garage and says "What's that puddle under the car?" Well, it turns out that the water pump leaks pretty good from the weep hole underneath. It's been fine all this time, and starts leaking the day I think the car is done and ready to register!! So, since the engineering whizzes have the water pump atop the distributor, and most things inaccessible without removing something else, I am now bending over the proverbial barrel to buy and replace expensive LT1 parts: water pump, cap and rotor, plugs and wires. Should be a real treat, based on how inaccessible some of these plugs are. :wtf:

Add to this that my wife hates my old cars because she sees them as unreliable (she's got me on this car) and you have me, currently residing on Pain Street.

I'll look tomorrow, but I am 99.99% sure that the puller I have looks like the one you posted a link too, which is good news!

I am pretty sure the HB has to come off, yes. At least, that's what I've been told!

There is an installation tool that really should be used to reinstall the HB, which I do not have. I have just been careful through the years and reinstalled mine without the proper installation tool and I guess I must have always been careful enough cause I never knocked out a bearing or anything.

My point is, you might want to sniff around for the reinsatall tool for the HB if this is new for you.

I don't think you need to pull the balancer to change the water pump on an LT-1. You may have to get the fans and such out of the way. Try not to harm the distributor or soak it in coolant. Maybe pick up a Clymers type manual on the car. They are not perfect but can give some information that will save a lot of grief.
